By Greg Jaffe and Damian Paletta January 26 at 1:20 PM
President Trump is expected to ask for $716 billion in defense spending when he unveils his 2019 budget next month, a major increase that signals a shift away from concerns about rising deficits, U.S. officials said.
The proposed budget is a victory for Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, who recently unveiled a strategy that proposes retooling the military to deter and, if necessary, fight a potential conflict with major powers such as China and Russia.
And it represents a setback for deficit hawks such as Mick Mulvaney, director of the Office of Management and Budget, who last year pressed for an increase in defense spending that could be offset by cuts to domestic programs.
The $716 billion figure for 2019 would cover the Pentagons annual budget as well as spending on ongoing wars and the maintenance of the U.S. nuclear arsenal. It would increase Pentagon spending by more than 7 percent over the 2018 budget, which still has not passed through Congress.

(24,324 posts)I would propose $1 trillion $256 Billion $759 Million $202 thousand $864 Dollars... and $79 cents.
We can get the money from SS, Medicare, CHIP, the Tree Planting program, NASA, NOAA and George Washington Bridge tolls.

(47,953 posts)I mean, listening to Rush the government must spend a brazillion dollars on food stamps. However cutting that program might cause a crash in lobster and caviar prices!

The rest can be distributed to health care, education, and senior care.
There is no reason to keep incerasing the fucking MIC budget. It needs to be cut down to a minimum of $1 billion to a maximum of $1.5 billion. It has been increased for 40 years with no end in sight and no auditing in sight.
DoD must be thoroughly audited and cut waste. Bigly. Bet 90% of them are just contractor waste, and their budget is now set at $1 billion and WILL decrease until the audit is thoroughly complete.
By then the DoD budget will have a permanent budget of $20 billion and learn to live within their means.
That means fucking sell off the crap that the DoD contractors keeps making or convert the factory that makes it.

(24,376 posts)Reducing the money sent to the Pentagon means you "hate the troops!" Don't you know that?
Meanwhile, the last CEO of General Dynamics, a company that gets better than 90% of its revenue from military contracts, walks from his relatively short tenure with well over $100 million in taxpayer dollars.
So...no...you/we can NOT get a reduction in military spending. It goes to Union jobs and keeps entire economies afloat.
BTW, there is only ONE product made by the conglomerate General Dynamics that you and I can buy without a DOD purchase order;
Gulfstream Jets.
So...are you waiting for the Spring to put in your order for the $66.5 million GS-650ER?
PS; If they would just admit the military budget is what it is...a giant jobs program, and stop pretending it is what it isn't, at least we would be reading the same page.

(28,270 posts)We could cut our military in half and still have more than enough to defend this country.
OTOH Russia and its dictator Putin are attacking the USA 24/7 while Cadet Bone Spurs looks the other way!
