(182,879 posts)Trump Ordered Mueller Fired, but Backed Off When White House Counsel Threatened to Quit
WASHINGTON President Trump ordered the firing last June of Robert S. Mueller III, the special counsel overseeing the Russia investigation, according to four people told of the matter, but ultimately backed down after the White House counsel threatened to resign rather than carry out the directive.
The West Wing confrontation marks the first time Mr. Trump is known to have tried to fire the special counsel. Mr. Mueller learned about the episode in recent months as his investigators interviewed current and former senior White House officials in his inquiry into whether the president obstructed justice.
Amid the first wave of news media reports that Mr. Mueller was examining a possible obstruction case, the president began to argue that Mr. Mueller had three conflicts of interest that disqualified him from overseeing the investigation, two of the people said.
First, he claimed that a dispute years ago over fees at Trump National Golf Club in Sterling, Va., had prompted Mr. Mueller, the F.B.I. director at the time, to resign his membership. The president also said Mr. Mueller could not be impartial because he had most recently worked for the law firm that previously represented the presidents son-in-law, Jared Kushner. Finally, the president said, Mr. Mueller had been interviewed to return as the F.B.I. director the day before he was appointed special counsel in May.

(51,084 posts)Mr. McGahn disagreed with the presidents case and told senior White House officials that firing Mr. Mueller would have a catastrophic effect on Mr. Trumps presidency. Mr. McGahn also told White House officials that Mr. Trump would not follow through on the dismissal on his own. The president then backed off.
McGahn called DT a chicken.

(90,364 posts)... Red Don's obstruction case IMHO.
If this is true then there are multiple layers of Red Don getting in the way of the "nothing burger".
This goes beyond his ego not wanting to be bruised because of de-legitimizing his win in Nov

(11,841 posts)I mean, obviously if he HAD, the shit would hit the fan. But he didnt do it. So is even wanting to do it illegal? WH counsel did his job and straightened him out on it, since this was months ago. If he didnt listen, he would've fired him by now I'd guess.

(25,487 posts)WH Counsel did his job and told Trump he couldnt. Trump could have fired him, then easily found someone willing to do the firing. He followed the advice of counsel and gave up on the idea. Dont think that amounts to much.
As to Comey, he had the power to fire him, without any reason at all. A semblance of a rationale was provided, whether many find it believable or not.
I think the SC could rule that neither rise to an attempt at obstruction of justice. But then I dont really have any legal authority to back that up.
What we may clearly see as true and just are often not how the law ends up doing.

(11,841 posts)But if you just said "I'd like to kill that guy" nothing happens to you, unless you're threatening the president.
Another post mentions obstruction, and that seems like the only possible outlet. But I just dont see it being enough to take him out

(41 posts)They leaked this to see how MUCH outrage it causes because guess what? Trumpler is still thinking of firing him. Yeah, it sounds beyond idiotic, but remember who we're dealing with here. They are grasping for straws and this is a potential hail mary. Secret society? Exposed as a fraud. Deleted texts as part of a plot to 'get' Trump? Exposed as a fraud. Nunes' bullshit memo? Soon to be exposed.
What do they have left? Cobb and Co. have made a course correction, and he supposedly wants to get the useful idiot in front of Mueller, but again....to what end? He's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't if that actually comes to fruition. Seems to me, the Orange Anus is damn near painted into a corner. Advantage Mueller. Get it DONE Bob....finish him.
BTW: I'm watching the 11th hour right now and Brian WIlliams quotes Bill Kristol as saying:
"Who leaked this? Probably McGahn (perhaps even with Cobb) Why now? Well, it's effect will presumably be a negative reaction to firing Mueller. Which may well mean Trump recently returned to the idea, and this is a desperate last ditch effort by McGahn to stop him again."
.......pretty close to the theory I laid out above. Night all.

(36,827 posts)He wasn't Trump's personal attorney and was instead a federally employed attorney representing the executive branch. As such he could potentially face his own charge of obstruction of justice had he carried out Trump's order.
It's really just a case of history repeating itself. U.S. Attorney General Elliot Richardson and his deputy, William Ruckelshaus both quit when Nixon ordered them to fire special prosecutor, Archibald Cox.
