USDA Chief to People on Food Stamps: Get a JobSonny Purdue said the next farm bill should support work as the pathway to self-sufficiency.

According to a recent US Department of Agriculture report, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (formerly called food stamps) increasingly serves the working poor. Indeed, among working-age SNAP recipients, 57 percent either work or are seeking employment, and 22 percent are disabled.
Even so, USDA chief Sonny Perdue has a message for people who rely on the program: Get a job.
A significant portion of House Republicansthe so-called Freedom Caucuswill only vote for a farm bill that includes massive SNAP cuts. But most House Dems will only vote yes if the bill doesnt cut SNAP. As a result, he says passage of a farm bill in 2018 will be difficult if impossible.
But the leverage in this case is with the SNAP-supporting Democratsbecause if no farm bill passes in 2018, the programs funding will automatically renew at current levels, Hoefner says.

(17,018 posts)WTF is wrong with him?!? He apparently has no idea who actually receives food stamps. They can give billion dollar tax cuts to the Koch brothers and strive to make people go hungry. November 2018 can't get here soon enough.

(22,158 posts)I'd like him to be in the shoes of any of these who receive the food stamps, both in the urban cities as well as a rural county, so he'll maybe have a better understanding of the needs of these unfortunate folks. Also, a higher minimum wage would probably help a lot of these folks too, and they would be off the government dole, and on their own, which is probably what they want, instead of having to deal w/ government paperwork and crap.
You all know how some government entities and their business buddies seem to constantly fight higher minimum wage laws (in Missouri, they actually forced the city of St. Louis and KCMO to rescind their higher minimum wage laws by passing a statewide law banning cities from enacting higher minimum wage laws).
So much for Christian charity, eh?
What a shame...I for one, if some of my tax dollars are going to feed a family and kids who can't afford such a basic need as food on the table (and the parent(s) are working, unfortunately at a min. wage), definitely want to help them. Period. I would even bag up some of my groceries and take over to them.
I hope this guy gets an earful and more.

(6,044 posts)Sonny was two-term governor of Georgia and David is US Senator from GA (first cousins).
David has been an early and avid supporter and surrogate for Trump. Sonny a quieter supporter
plantation politics?
Farm Bill-mostly corporate agriculture welfare. Food stamp program was saved in the 90's when Newt Gingrich wanted to end it----saved by corporate agriculture and brand name food manufacturers because they are the beneficiaries of government spending on the taxpayer subsidized food.
After the phony tax reform bill drastically lowered taxes for the super wealthy- the middle class will be paying more for the subsidies.
The reason Democrats can't point this out is because we would lose congressional seats since corporate agriculture is so powerful. what we get instead is a phony debate, with Republicans denouncing "lazy" food stamp recipients and Democrats defending the food needy.
We never get a real debate on the destructive economics of the Agricultural industry.
It is almost as though we need a union for households in order to get real information into the public square.
Nader was a spoiler but the concept of a consumer's union was a good one-it just never got far enough.

(65,160 posts). . .70% of households with at least one kid, and nobody disabled or elderly have at least one outside the home income.
But i'm sure Perdue was only talking to the other 30%.

(65,180 posts)stupid Perdue fails to realize that a hungry person won't be in as good a shape to look for work. Hunger is the main issue. The Repuke Party has an extremely serious problem with morals and ethics.

(3,622 posts)We were told not to be in uniform if you were using food stamps.
I didn't as I was single and didn't need them but several families I knew couldn't get on base housing. Off base housing and other expenses forced some families to apply for food stamps.
Big stink about bringing the service I to disrepute etc...
