Guy runs down boat - cites "Fake News" as defense

Larsen (owner and pilot of offending boat) a Roseburg resident, told The Oregonian/OregonLive by phone Friday that he wasn’t using his cellphone while driving his Bayliner and referred to such allegations as “fake news.” Larsen also said a lawsuit seemed unnecessary because the people in the Weldcraft weren’t hurt badly.

The criminal case is ongoing. Larsen has pleaded not guilty to the misdemeanor crimes of reckless operation of a boat, fourth-degree assault and recklessly endangering the lives of others."

They have the boat, the above video as evidence, many-many eyewitnesses - but the whole thing is "Fake News"!

But the cell phone records should be dispositive on whether Larsen had help from his handheld device, or if he's just naturally reckless. When I first heard that a lawsuit had just been filed for this incident from last summer, I wondered if it wasn't prematurely filed (guessing the statute of limitations is two years on the claim for relief). But from Larsen's comments, it seems he may not be the most cooperative person on God's green earth (or terribly cognizant of the seriousness of his misconduct), and a lawsuit is a good way to get someone to cooperate.

I just sort of assumed that this was a planned stunt or good photoshop (or the video equivalent).

I mean that there was a camera set up at just the right angle to catch the action... and that the camera and it's digital recording survived the crash and resulting dunk in the water... plus there was almost no hesitation by the people on the boat to jumping overboard AND the bayliner didn't actually kill or seriously injure anyone.

This was almost Russia dash cam but better... which made me think "fake video"

when I saw this posted without commentary in another thread.
If there is a real investigation and lawsuits, etc, then I believe this is real.
It's just that there have been a lot of "jackass" style staged or photoshopped images.

It appears the camera was on the fishing boat to capture the day's fun, you know, catching fish, laughing, and just general - overall fun for the day. Not difficult to see how it could have survived if one takes a look at the mangled remains of the small boat.

And as for after the incident, could have been another camera - a lot of video phones around these days.

And if I saw a speeding Bayliner coming at me full bore , shit - I'd jump

No sense of a "fake video" to me - and I am a skeptic of the first order.

that the man in the fishing boat takes people out to go fishing and provides a video of the experience. It may be under the table payment which is why he is not called a business. Just my guess because that is the way things like this are usually done.

Here’s the business Facebook page. They do videos with a GoPro and post them on there all the time.

So the boat had at least 2 cameras mounted to catch fishing action. No surprising, especially on a fishing business boat.

It’s great advertising on the cheap.

I noticed he’s a huge supporter of wearing a life jacket at all times now. Lesson learned.

Simple enough. I really wish judges would make decisions like this. A grownup who is this much of a spoiled brat will not learn his lesson unless his toys are taken away from him.

Despite being previously warned by relatives about paying attention and not using phone while piloting the boat.
