There is an old saying "You can change the law, but you can't change the way people think." There have been plenty of studies that have determined how difficult it is to change minds.
By way of reference, when I was in college I knew an exchange student from Germany. I can recall her telling me about the many times she has been out somewhere, a cafe or a store, and overheard some old man or old woman talk about the good old days during the Third Reich. I also had a literature professor who was from Germany and was probably born sometime in the early 1950's. He would talk about the same thing. He moved to the U.S. because he didn't want to raise his children in Germany. He would talk to us, usually in reference to some Post-War German literature we were reading, about how many people never got over being fascists. He was one of my favorite professors and I will never forget him saying "People may wonder why there was so little literature published in Germany in the 1950's. That is what happens when you kill all the writers!"
Trump voters, who may not be fascist but who are people subject to authoritarianism, are never going to change their minds. Those Trump voters who have turned on him are a small number and I doubt any more will turn away from him. Just read the letters that were published in the NYT this morning. They don't care what Trump says, how he behaves, how nuts he is. They will never admit to his failed leadership. There are some people who can never admit they are wrong. And there are others who are happy to live under an authoritarian.
Democrats need to focus on their own voters. 2018 and 2020 is going to be all about voter registration, challenging gerrymandering, and getting voters to the polls.

(42,641 posts)Voter enthusiasm is key. When voter participation is low, as in non-Presidential elections, the GOP does far better.
And conservatives are generally authoritarians, and are unwilling to consider new ideas. Trump ran on fear, and fear is an excellent motivator for the uninformed voter.
