He wants to get huge ratings, get attention, and then he'll claim he did something at the last minute to avert a shutdown, and he'll go off to Mar-a-Lago to accept the applause of his friends.

Maybe the stable genius" who "went to the best schools" can get someone to explain (in terms his little pea brain can understand) how the markets hate uncertainty.

(1,216 posts)My social security check arrived on time, and the traffic in Seattle was very light during the shutdown. Those federal employees furloughed received back pay.
But those applying for passports had to wait.

Back pay may have been true for others but not us

(5,270 posts)Economy in my area is very tourism dependent and the shutdown caused considerable disruption because it occurred in fall when tourism that would have normally been at peak was severely depressed. A shutdown now in mid-winter at lowest point of tourist season would not have as much impact as it did the last time.

Additionally, there are direct costs to the taxpayers when agencies have to take extra actions to safely shut down programs and when payments to our creditors and contractors are delayed.

(1,216 posts)As for the total cost, since total amount of money in circulation does not change during a shutdown, I wonder if loss of business by some is made up by gain in business by others. If a tourist area lost business, that money could have gone to other spending somewhere or saved for later spending.

I especially love the Museum of Natural History. And all those art museums with fantastic paintings.
I am fortunate enough to have gone many times before and since. My current favorite museum is the National Portrait Gallery. I also always go to the Mineral and Gem exhibit for a quick glance at the diamonds and then on to the wonderful other minerals and gems. Last time I went to the Natural history museum and saw a recently updated exhibit on the evolution of man. Ahhh, no place like Dc for learning and feeding the soul with art!
