White supremacists not only shed their masks in 2017 but unleashed one of the deadliest years for extremist violence in almost half a century.
Over the past 12 months, white supremacists committed the largest number of domestic-extremist-related killings, helping to make 2017 the fifth-deadliest year for extremist violence since 1970, according to a newly released report from the Anti-Defamation Leagues Center on Extremism.
The center counted a total of 34 people killed by domestic extremists, of which 18 were killed by white supremacists, more than double the number from the previous year. In the past decade, right-wing extremism made up 71 percent of extremist-related murders, compared with 26 percent of murders by Islamic extremists.

(396 posts)"extremism" in the eyes of law enforcement. Something like the Las Vegas massacre won't be included in this because it's not considered "right-wing extremism" even though we all know the killer was likely a right-winger due to his extreme gun ownership alone. Along with his age and wealth. All those things point to a man who likely was a right-winger. They're the only ones who do mass shootings like that. But because LE has been very secretive about his political affiliation and motive (they claim they still don't have a motive smh), it doesn't get included.

(1,202 posts)I was just listening to an NPR interview with a former Nazi group leader here in the USA and he mentioned many gang like beatings. I can't help but imagine those stats may have an uptick.

(10,849 posts)Assuming the 2017 rates were close, 18 out of 17,000+- seems pretty negligible. What is that, around .5% of murders?
