Washington politics in 2018 so far promises to be a rollicking ride with unrelenting foolishness and embarrassments from the White House. In a few short days Donald Trump has managed to insult El Salvador, Haiti, and the entire continent of Africa. His former campaign chair and White House chief strategist, Steve Bannon, was quoted accusing the Presidents son of treason, and then was subpoenaed by special counsel Robert Mueller. And growing concerns about Trumps mental fitness spurred him to laughably declare that hes a stable genius.
However, with regard to the Nielsen ratings of the cable news networks, the new year is starting off pretty much the way last year concluded. Rachel Maddow continues to surge with poignant reporting on subjects that America's news consumers are clearly interested in. She is dominating her competition on Fox News and providing a boost to her colleagues on MSNBC. Meanwhile, Fox News is more often finding itself in the unfamiliar position of an also ran with reporting that is becoming more deranged everyday. They appear to be adopting the editorial lunacy of Alex Jones' Infowars and other right-wing fringe outlets that specialize in conspiracy theories and propaganda.
In the first two weeks of 2018, Maddow has won every single night in the key 25-54 year old demographic. She's consistently beating Sean Hannity and every other cable news program in primetime. She has a twenty-one percent average margin of victory over Hannity (686K vs. 568K) for the first half of January. Maddow is also topping Hannity in total viewers by about eight percent (3.1M vs. 2.9M), driven by victories in seven out of nine nights.
MSNBC is seeing its schedule score additional victories with the programs that follow Maddow. The 11th Hour with Brian Williams beat Fox News @Night with Shannon Bream every night. The Last Word with Lawrence O'Donnell beat Fox's Laura Ingraham Angle eight out of nine nights. And MSNBC took the whole primetime block four nights during the period.

(9,670 posts)And are too brainwashed by their representatives and news media to realize that the wool is being pulled over their eyes.
Question is, how many of them will ever figure it out?
Will multiple indictments and convictions do the trick? Will they ask, in retrospect, how "their" news sources could overlook and misreport so consistently and so pervasively?
Or will they believe that the entire legal system is skewed against them?
I wish like hell it was option A....but history tells us that it will be option B.

(16,254 posts)news rather than lies and unsubstantiated reporting. With Rachel, they get a deep session of history to build up to her main stories and then she makes a deep impression on her listeners as to how this news item will affect the common citizen. I like the way she warns people to keep an eye open for a certain outcome for a situation she and her staff haven't been able to totally confirm. This Russia/Trump case is SO involved that a person almost needs a chart of events and people involved to get a feel for what happened/is happening. The money involved is going to blow our minds when all the facts come out.
I also like the way she is shaming the Republicans for clearing obstacles in front of the Trump family. I think we'll find that the party has become so involved in this scenario, they can't afford for the truth to come to the surface. She doesn't seem to be scared of them, although I worry about her well-being.
My only complaint with Rachel is when she repeats something in three different ways. She doesn't do that as much anymore, but will sneak it in if she is long on time and short on news items. The one thing I've noticed is that her guests seem to respect her and are happy they were called to contribute. She doesn't interrupt or badger them and seems to understand governmental procedures and laws so she asks intelligent questions.
Congrats, Rachel. You and your staff do good work!!!!

(7,188 posts)few Dems - trying to show "both sides" and challenge them. But all Chris does is argue with them.
Rachel weaving story, brings in journalists who break news, lawyers to explain legal issues and very, very few pundit types.

(1,278 posts)however, as Mainstream News goes, she is unique. Personally, I would hear from Dena Takuri and ASE of AJ+ and Abby Martin of TeleSur, as they can get more stories even Rachel can't/won't present. Or at least until they "blow up".
