"DACA Analogy"

DACA analogy: The President lights a forest fire which is about to burn down many homes, says he wants to put it out, Dems agree it needs to be put out, but President won’t allow the fire to be put out until he gets money for a monument to himself.

about the monument to himself (the wall), it still ignores one fact.

There was a lawsuit started by several states challenging the legal basis for President Obama to have established DACA, and it was making its way through the courts. Certainly, with Gorsuch on the SCOTUS, it would have had a good chance of being successful, but even if Garland or a Hillary nominee would have been in the seat currently held by Gorsuch, it is not a slam dunk that a Presidential executive order will be upheld by the courts.

If this case had gone to the Supreme Court to decide whether or not President Obama exceeded his authority, I think we'd see a situation where DACA would have been terminated, and you would have Republicans in Congress saying, "Well, the courts have spoken, we don't have to do anything." And they still would press on with everything that any one of them has asked for in order to codify DACA or something like it.

Going back to the analogy, the fire was already there, but Trump is "Fire Marshall Bill" (thanks, Jim Carrey!) when it comes to putting it out. I don't think he has a lot of animus towards the DACA beneficiaries, but he is always obsessed with getting something for "the deal". With hard liners in the GOP in Congress, especially the House, having that ill-will towards any form of what they perceive as amnesty, Fire Marshall Bill is free to flail about helplessly, grabbing a pail of gasoline to throw on the fire instead of water.
