Conor Lamb 33 is a Marine veteran and former assistant U.S. attorney. Already has turned race into a single-digit race; Democrats didn't even run anyone against Murphy in 2014 or 2016. Donald Trump won district by 19 points in 2016.
Lamb is more conservative Democrat - pro life and supports gun rights. He is running on pocket book issues, Medicare, retirees, wages, etc. Will likely get Union support that used to go to Murphy because Saccone is for right to work.
Dems outnumber GOP registered voters by about 70,000.

May not agree with him on everything but agree he is much better than Saccone. If Lamb wins, sends clear message to GOP

Trump coming next week to support current state Rep. Rick Saccone, the GOPs nominee
Saccone is a veteran, has a PhD - worked in South Korea - believe his wife is South Korean Both sons went to VMI.
*considered one of the most conservative members of the PA General Assembly.
* strong advocacy of gun rights - multiple bills seeking to expand the rights of gun owners; one such bill would amend state law to prohibit discrimination against gun carriers and criticized Chuck E. Cheese's for its "policy barring customers from carrying firearms inside"
* 2013 introduced failed National Motto Display Act bill, which would have required PA public school districts to post "In God We Trust" in every school building; in 2016 similar legislation passed - encouraged but not mandated the posting of the motto in schools).
* 2013, sponsored a "day of prayer" resolution, seeking to designate April 30 as a National Fast Day
*2012 Saccone introduced nonbinding resolution to declare 2012 as the "Year of the Bible" in PA. passed unanimously, gots lots of criticism.
* was going to run against Bob Casey but changed to run for Congress. When running for Senate pledged to be a Trump ally

(12,618 posts)If there's one thing 2016 should teach us, it's that we can't afford to insist that everybody agrees with us 100% of the time on 100% of the issues (paging Susan Sarandon). Get the majority back. We can argue the little things later.

(11,949 posts)He is a liberal in a moderates clothing!! Just what a district like that needs.
Out and out supports Unions, Health Care for everyone. Warns entitlement reform means taking guaranteed benefits. etc.
One question about the pro-life thing? The website is silent about it. Or I missed it(very likely!)
Is he for making Abortion Illegal? Or is he personally against it? Two very, very different positions.
Thanks for the heads up. I may pitch in 20 or 50 or so. A Marine Captain should have an automatic advantage in that district.

(7,188 posts)One thing - republican also has military background so that is probably a wash, but he is a bit nutty on religious issues which may turn off people (see my original post). Plus he is pro-Trump, so I think that will hurt him as people will want an independent republican - not a rubber stamp.

(4,834 posts)Why the need for the special election? What part of Pa. in the 18th district? Did this part of Pa. somehow slip into the Bible belt?
