This commercial is from a year ago, but a more recent commercial has been playing in my area. At the least there will be less need for cashiers if more and more people start using this scan and go app.

Stanley Roper
(25 posts)but evidently not very clear to you, because you're seeing conservative boogeymen where one doesn't exist. Stinks of paranoia to me.
And I read the TOS when I agreed and accepted to its terms.
And you are making an assumption with no basis in fact. You know fuck all about me.
"No personal attacks or flaming
Do not personally attack, insult, flame, threaten, bully, harass, stalk, negatively call-out, ascribe ugly ulterior motives to, or make baseless claims about any member of this community. Do not post in a manner that is hostile, abusive, or aggressive toward any member of this community.
Why we have this rule: Civility begets quality discussions. Democratic Underground members are highly passionate about politics which means discussions can get heated -- but they don't need to get nasty. There's no reason why a community of intelligent adults who agree on a majority of political issues can't have a conversation without insulting each other or resorting to other anti-social behaviors."

(30,481 posts)You seem passionate about the TOS. That is good. Please take your issues up with moderators or admins. You seem well enough versed that you should know that.

Everybody should. Great job. Really great job.

(35,701 posts)It is a tough job. Customers are way more sullen and rude than cashiers imo. And cashiers have to deal with it. The ones who are sullen and rude do not last long. Checkouts are often close to the doors which are constantly opening and closing, making for cold drafts in the winter and hot blasts of air in the summer. I have seen cashiers having to wear coats, hats and gloves trying to keep warm in the winter. Cashiers also need to know how to pack a grocery bag - not as easy as it looks. And then some customers try to tell them how to do it, as if they know better. Before you ask, no I am not a cashier, just a customer who has observed cashiers and customers over the years and my vote for civility definitely goes to the cashiers - on average. Obviously there are exceptions.

(3,168 posts)Most big-box stores like Walmart have something like 30 cash registers up front, but only 3 or 4 are usually open at a time, seems like! If they had to do away with those 4 cashiers because of the app, won't they have to hire 4 people whose job it is to check every receipt that goes out the door? I don't know if this will catch on or not. From a shopping perspective I like it, but it seems like it makes it too easy for people to steal stuff. We shall see.....
Demsrule86
(68,667 posts)ProfessorGAC
(65,168 posts)At least with regard to the big box stores, i think Moose has a point. I have NEVER, even during the holidays, seen more than a third of a registers open. Wal-Mart, Target, what used to be K Mart. 28 registers and 4 to 8 open. Take six people away and who makes sure that everything was properly paid for. 6 people at a kiosk near the front door.
Where do you shop that the population of cashiers is so plentiful? Sure don't see that around here.

(28,211 posts)I told them that after shopping, I don't want to do the work of scanning each piece of merchandise and then be inspected that I did it right. She said, "Oh, it's easy. I'll show you." I'm an IT person for 30 years, I know how the shit works and I can do it my self. That wasn't the point. I told them that for what I pay and the convenience of scanning the merch, I want it done by a person. Once we accept this, all stores will be impersonal as a Horn & Hardarts automat store.
It's bad enough you can't find anybody in their fucking store, as I was just there the other day. A different store with a different layout. It took me several minutes just to find someone to ask where something was. I almost asked the paint guy because he was trapped.

(205,991 posts)And they're always busy. I always choose them when I have only a few items and they're the way to go if it's the busiest time of day. The cashiers seem grateful for the self checkout too, the first time I used the one at Hannaford, one of the cashiers directed me there and showed me how to use it.

(38,326 posts)Probably too many people leaving stuff in their carts and not scanning it, or claiming everything that had to be weighed was carrots.
It's a term Australian National University criminologist Emmeline Taylor coined after reviewing recent surveys from around the world, which suggest up to one-third of customers regularly steal when using a DIY checkout to pay for their groceries.
Coles and Woolworths won't discuss the scale of losses through their self-scan service tills but Dr Taylor's research reveals how carrots uncovered just how many shoppers were underpaying for fresh produce.
Dr Talyor said four years ago, one of the Australia's large supermarket brands discovered it was selling more carrots than it had in stock.

(22,976 posts)There is always one remaining standby checker, in case something goes wrong with the scanners, etc. And the system works pretty well if you're just buying basic stuff.
But the writing is on the wall: Checkers will soon be the next service station attendants -- long gone.
treestar
(82,383 posts)That could get tiring after a while. Have to pull the phone out each time. Maybe if you go in for one item or two. Otherwise, I'd rather the cashier scan them or even scan them myself at a machine in a self checkout. Each one of the improvements puts the store's work onto the buyer.
melm00se
(4,994 posts)has it's place.
I use self checkout when I have less than 10 items. It is faster than standing in line for a regualr cashier.
Anything more than 10 items, the self check counter isn't big enough to handle the items as they stack up after being scanned.
greymattermom
(5,754 posts)but you have to show your ID every time, even if you are medicare age like me. If you use one of those checkouts, someone has to come over to you and look at your id, and that person might be located somewhere else in the store. The bottom line is that it can be much slower than using the regular lines. I only use them if I have just a few items, not including beer or wine. The store makes a lot of money on wine because they have it displayed all over the store.
cwydro
(51,308 posts)No ones eliminated.

(3,041 posts)for self scan? That's what it is here. They've removed half the tills and replaced them with self-scan. And 1 babysitter. So in the store closest to me that's 4 cashiers gone. Of the remaining 5 tills they only keep 2 open in order to force people to use self scan.
cwydro
(51,308 posts)Numerous tills open.
Its a busy store. I prefer the self checkout.

(500 posts)I enjoyed my job. Many cashiers enjoy their job...at first. Over time you get beat down. I have been demeaned, spit on , and even punched in the face. I have had a gun put to my head as they robbed the tills. But I kept showing up. Because I needed to eat and my kids needed to eat. There will be massive layoffs in retail and will continue. I am not sure how we solve this.

(5,325 posts)Society will survive just as it survived when other jobs became obsolete. Most telephone operators, office switchboard operators, buggy whip manufacturers, ice men, elevator operators, lamp lighters, bowling pin setters, photo processors, typists, file clerks.......the list could go on and on. All of those jobs eventually became obsolete, and people needed to develop new skills to qualify themselves for the jobs that will be available in the future. 'Twas ever thus.
