Kyle Stephens confronts former USA Gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar at his sentencing [WARNING: Graphic]
3:24 PM - 16 Jan 2018
Kyle Stephens is a brave woman (as are all the women/girls who have fought and are fighting to overcome what that asshole did to them).

(11,578 posts)"...Nevertheless, she persisted." Words to live by. Kyle persisted, even when her parents didn't believe her. How frequently that happens. It will take continued courage, bravery, and, especially, persistence by strong girls (and boys) and strong women (and men) speaking their truth to power to overcome this unspeakable, pervasive scourge of sexual abuse by the patriarchy that infects our entire country and the world.

(37,748 posts)This may be the first time in the history of the universe that Sports Illustrated in GD is actually a relevant matter rather than a middle finger.

(22,435 posts)Lots of people worked very hard to not see what was going on with Nassar, and they were willing to pay for it with children's innocence. Sick and sad and I'm glad he's getting what's coming to him. Now take it to the top and root out the accomplices at Karolyi Ranch, other organizations and USA Gymnastics.

(1,474 posts)I am so impressed by her. Almost feel a joy. But any happiness I feel about her bravery is so trivial compared to what she lived through. And what countless other girls live through. I can only compare my feelings about her to feelings I have when watching or reading about holocaust survivors. The evil that so many have endured by hideous humans is beyond what I am able to truly feel. I should be grateful for my lack of life experiences that would make me understand how victims like her feel.
This inspired and disturbed me a great deal. I have been shedding tears from the time I watched her through the time writing this post. Some things are unforgettable.

(6,598 posts)One was a victim of this monster, who decided she could not live with the pain of what he did, and committed suicide. Her mother spoke for her at the hearing.
The other was the father of a victim who had insisted for years that his daughter apologize to Nassar for her accusations, causing them to become estranged. When the truth finally emerged, he could not live with his own treatment of his daughter. In ill health, he killed himself.
This is a local story, and the head of MSU is taking a lot of criticism over their lousy handling of this matter. I hope this judge throws the book at him!

(13,501 posts)is and was a monster. Those women who spoke at his sentencing are brave heroes. All the girls who he abused have been affected adversely, and so many of them have risen to the top. I'm finding so much inspiration in their strength and stories.

(36,886 posts)Larry Nassar sent a 6-page, single-spaced letter to the judge saying he is concerned about his mental ability to face victim statements for 4 days.
He also complained about the hearing becoming "a media circus."
"I didn't orchestrate this, you did," judge tells Nassar.
"You may find it harsh that youre here listening, but nothing is as harsh as what victims endured in your hands," judge tells Nassar.
This isnt worth the paper its written on," judge says. "Theres no truth in here. Its delusional. You need to talk to these issues with a therapist, and that is not me."

(36,886 posts)My last post on this: thank you to all the women who spoke out (and an invisible hand to those who are not yet ready), a big thank you to Judge Rosemarie E. Aquilina for giving the victims a voice and for sharing caring words after their testimonies, and a big FUCK YOU to those who should have protected these young girls/women.

(36,886 posts)I hope that these women/girls and their families find a path out of the hell that was forced upon them.
One of the things that I got out of the court testimonies is that there is a sisterhood among survivors. May they all lift each other up.
(I guess I lied about my last post being my last post. I just couldn't help myself!)
