Homeland Security secretary grilled over Trump comments

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen faced heated questions from Democratic lawmakers on Tuesday over her recollections of a White House meeting in which President Trump described some poor nations sending immigrants to the United States as “shithole countries.”

The remarks have set off a days-long firestorm, raising the odds of a government shutdown this weekend and emboldening Democrats to demand that a fix protecting certain immigrants brought to the United States as children be included as part of a deal.

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), who was in the meeting with Trump, grilled Nielsen over her memories of what the president said.

Nielsen testified she did not recall Trump saying “shithole countries” while she spoke under oath before the Senate Judiciary Committee. She described the meeting as heated and said many people in the room used coarse language.

I knew a newish DHS sec'y was plopped in the position, but darned if I could name them before reading this.

Ringing a bell.

Lying liars. Twisting twisters. Fabricating fabricators. Deceiving deceivers. Perverting perverters. Desecrating desecrators.

Next I ring up Senator Durbin.

You know from other posts and replies that I am a Christian of Eastern Orthodoxy.

However, God forgive me, the maladjusted governance we are affected by presently is near tearing me apart spiritually. "Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me?"

I have a patristic book on despair. I have not come to the brink of my spiritual endurance. And I WILL NOT.

Like God is sending us the ten plagues.

Then I try to get grounded in my spiritual core.
I believe Earth is not a vacation planet.
We are here to learn and grow.

And the lessons we are learning about evil, corruption and greed
will be burned into our souls for eternity. We will never forget them.

Hang in there and be glad that you have a conscience and a moral
core unlike many of our fellow citizens.

would keep me from getting so distressed.

I got sick (not the flu, not pneumonia) just before New Year's--most likely contributing to my distress. Trying to shake it off. Whatever it is, I've had it up to here.

Just got off with Sen. Durbin's Rock Island office. I sputtered and could barely get out my comments. The staff guy said he understood.

Sorry I am burdening anyone with my posting.

That no one was particularly stunned to hear him speak in such a brash manner at the meeting? Or does it mean they just tune him out when he goes on a rant? Or a blather session??

Or have they just all agreed to their story that they don’t recall hearing him say the words in question? And they intend to stick by it. Even if they look foolish.
