Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) on Monday announced she plans to boycott President Trump's State of the Union address to Congress at the end of the month, joining a handful of other Democratic lawmakers who are skipping the annual event.
"I'm here on Martin Luther King Jr. Day to say I will not be going to the State of the Union," Jayapal said in a video posted on social media.
"I think it is absolutely unacceptable to see the racism and the hatred coming out the White House in a way in which this president is fueling the flames of divisiveness across our country," she added.
She pointed to Trump's recent controversial remarks in which he reportedly described several nations as "shithole countries" during an Oval Office meeting with lawmakers on immigration reform, referring to immigrants from African countries, Haiti and El Salvador.
Jayapal blasted Trump for "demeaning entire countries [by] calling them remarkably vulgar terms."
The Washington lawmaker joins Democratic Reps. John Lewis (Ga.), Frederica Wilson (Fla.), Earl Blumenauer (Ore.) and Maxine Waters (Calif.) in skipping the president's address, with many citing Trump's recent remarks.

(13,424 posts)I fully understand the reasoning behind Dems who want to boycott that POS. At the same time, if the boycott grows, Repubs will fill those empty seats with cheering sycophants which will give the impression that him and his speech are well received by everyone in the chamber. If almost all House and Senate Dems do attend, there will be a sizable bloc of people sitting and maybe booing/catcalling to demonstrate how hated and his policies are.

(15,292 posts)Any chance that real US citizens and our representatives can deny the dump of an audience is good.
If the uglicans are cheering, so be it. It will be hollow and scripted and they know it.
I hope every Democrat finds something else to do, like walking a dog or taking care of someone who needs it.

(15,292 posts)You're right - 10-20 ruddy-faced white men cheering for a racist will probably fill the screen.
Strange world we live in when most of us are not white (or pure), most of us are not men, most of us that give-a-shit are not old and endowed. And yet they get to tell all of us what to do. And they don't even follow their own rules.
Time for one person (resident), one vote. (Non)representative government is a failure in these times.
