I went to see the newly released movie The Post. Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks, and a host of actors you'll know when you see 'em.
The subject is so timely that I wonder if it was planned, or is it by chance? Very moving. And to consider how different things might be if the events and decisions in that series of events had gone differently.
This is a must-see. A very interesting look at the issues involved in publishing govt secrets, and when going too far is really too far, and does the govt have a say-so in what is published, or a right to preview and agree to publishing parts?
The plot moves quickly, it doesn't drag, the script is good, the acting is,well, the caliber you'd expect with this gang. It's not quite as exciting as All the President's Men, I think. But it's exciting in a different way.
Very timely, given the "The press is the enemy of the people!" meme from the current President.

and when Nixon came on the screen I shouted CROOK

(6,930 posts)Everyone knows about Nixon. There is no reason to shout out in a movie theatre while others are trying to enjoy a movie. That is rude.

(92,217 posts)The big difference between then and now is that the media did not tone it down, or back away because of external pressure
People who discarded the argument that the Supreme Court was not reason enough to vote for a Democratic nominee, by that action, the country is now in great peril.

(1,202 posts)Nixon missed by not loading up the courts...his big mistake. One that Trump is trying not to make.

Meryl perfectly played the part of a woman trying to come into her own after a lifetime of being in a mans world.
My husband was in the army during Vietnam so this movie had special significance. I was a teen then but remember my dad screaming at tv news all the time, just like us now.

(37,648 posts)I was surprised by that....and as a woman, very moved. I could relate to her situation.
I was a teen during this era, too, but was too goofy and partying too much to pay too much attention. Watergate caught my attention, though. I watched some of the hearings that were televised.

(11,473 posts)About Watergate and other issues. Of course we totally disagreed about pot, i said his drinking was worse.
But that propaganda movie did its work had all the parents thinking pot was evil and dangerous drug.
At the end of his life he wished for pot as he was dying of cancer. That was before CA made it medically legal.

(37,648 posts)After the cops in town raided a local hangout of teens and arrested a bunch of 'em for pot, she said that was a waste of resources and how awful to zero in on kids, and she didn't see how it could be worse than drinking.

(37,648 posts)to my surprise, a woman and man sitting near me would vocalize occasionally. By saying, "Yes!" and "Good!" I was blown away when the man expressed his approval when Meryl Streep finally stood up for herself against that man who kept referring to the paper as her father's or her husband's paper.

(2,739 posts)I unfortunately was listening to our town's local community radio station this morning to a conservative-leaning show. The producer said she'd fallen asleep during it, and said don't bother to go. The guys were pleased to hear that, one calling it revisionist history.
Obviously they'd listened to revisionist history themselves, and the producer (who rarely knows the answer to any public affairs questions because she avoids the news). The guys clearly drink the FoxNews / RW talk radio Koolaid.

(37,648 posts)I can understand why Trump and his supporters would not want people to go see this movie. It's about the First Amendment and Freedom of the Press, and how the White House can and can not interfere with information being provided to the public.
