Nancy Abu-Bonsrah Johns Hopkins First Black Female Neurosurgeon Resident





The most important day for fourth year medical students is the third Friday in March, when they find out where they have been accepted for their residency program. It’s called Match Day. For medical student Nancy Abu-Bonsrah, it also became the day she made history as the first Black woman to become a neurosurgery resident at Johns Hopkins Hospital.



After moving from Ghana to the United States with her parents at age 15, Abu-Bonsrah went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry and chemistry from Mount St. Mary’s University. In 2012, she started her medical student journey at the prestigious Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where she will graduate as the first doctor in her family. Upon completion of her neurosurgery training residency program, Abu-Bonsrah is also set to become the first Black woman neurosurgeon at Johns Hopkins. Abu-Bonsrah shared the good news on her personal Facebook page.

My friend has not gotten back to me. I want to be there. I did it with a bum leg last year. The crowd was massive and it was over six hours from start to finish. We were stuck inside the Boston Common after the speech's...took over an hour to get out after that just to march. Lol~ don't drink much water...we could not see a potty.

It was awesome. It started out as a gloomy day...the speeches started and then the sun broke through and shined on us all.

The parents worked hard and were able to send 3 children to local Catholic schools. The kids grew up, attended college and are now in their early forties. One is a doctor and the two others are registered nurses.

35. My son's best friend is an immigrant from Ghana on a full-ride graduate scholarship to JHU.

Worked his way through community college in Indiana as a janitor, and was accepted into Johns Hopkins. Straight A's, profoundly intelligent and moral, now he's going to grad school. My boy's a Bloomberg scholar, Phi Beta Kappa, says that George is the smartest and hardest-working student on the planet.

Knowing of the grinding widespread poverty and privation in Haiti and some of the African countries, I might be inclined to bundled them in the category used by Donald Trump (probably cleaning up the name of the category for family TV), but that is the reason so many of the people there want to come here. The people themselves are usually hardworking, industrious, intelligent, and honest and they frequently arrive with little more than the clothes on their back and within a decade or so are very solid members of thriving communities, with children who can aspire to even better thing (something not possible in their home country).

Sending refugees and immigrants back to countries recognized for being so backward and wretched is practically a war crime.

And, while it's easy to disparage Haiti and much of Africa, I really really doubt that Norway is as poor, backward, corrupt, and benighted.
