Paterno family: Sanctions over Sandusky "defame legacy"

(CBS/AP) INDIANAPOLIS - The family of Hall of Fame football coach Joe Paterno says the NCAA's sanctions defame his legacy and are a panicked response to the scandal that led to them.

The statement was released Monday by Paterno's family. It says President Rodney Erickson, acting Athletic Director David Joyner and the entire Board of Trustees failed by not seeking a full hearing before the NCAA's infractions committee.

The family also says that punishing "past, present and future" students because of former assistant Jerry Sandusky's crimes did not serve justice.

The NCAA imposed a harsh set of sanctions on Penn State Monday, less than two weeks after an independent investigation found that football coach Joe Paterno and other senior school leaders failed to stop former defensive coach Jerry Sandusky from sexually abusing children on campus.

NCAA President Mark Emmert announced that the association was banning the football team from all post-season play and bowl games for four years, reducing the program's number of scholarships from 25 to 15 per year for four years, and fining the program $60 million. The association also vacated all of the program's wins between 1998 and 2011.

He defamed his own legacy when he did NOTHING.

Though sometimes I have a sneaking suspicion he did not do "nothing", but maybe something much worse than said out loud.

Who else thinks his "sudden death" was awfully timely to avoid questioning. Granted he had terminal cancer and he was old, but . . . something about the timing just makes me a tad suspicious, ya know?

He defamed his own legacy when he sat there in silence and let his good buddy rape kids. That's what he did ya know. He raped kids. Kids! And Joe Pa knew it and did nothing. He doesn't deserve a legacy.

And I can't see where this decision punishes any student. past present or future.

These people need to shut the fuck up right now. Before somebody gets pissed enough to make the sanctions as severe as they really should have been.

As shot as Paterno's legacy is, they are somehow making it worse every time they make these misguided, pompous "statements," which they do about every day.

They need to STFU. The sanctions are not because of Sandusky. The sanctions are because of what wasn't done ABOUT Sandusky. Paterno is the central figure in that lack of leadership.

They weren't part of any coverup. Paterno was. Losing his "legacy" for putting football over human decency is a fact flowing from his decisions, not something the NCAA did.

His "legacy" will now forever be remembered as he looked the other while a sick fucking asshole raped boys in his office and the locker room and all they were concerned about was a winning football program.
