Swanson fumed that the film about a woman who falls in love with a mysterious sea creature is an explicit violation of Leviticus 20:15, which declares that if a man has sexual relations with an animal, he is to be put to death, and you must kill the animal.
Its hard to even describe what goes on in the film, Swanson said, but, of course, the death penalty crime of Leviticus 20:15 had to do with the absolute lowest, most depraved activity that humans have ever engaged in at all and its only the most depraved people in the world that even want to mention this stuff, let alone sit there and watch it for two and a half hours on the movie screen.
The movie itself is completely centered around cross-species mating, he continued. The movie [approvingly] presents the Leviticus 20:15 sinful habit that really has only been part of the most depraved people, the most insane people that ever lived in the history of mankind.
This is the end of culture, Swanson said. This is the end of civilization as we know it.

Dude, you missed the part where it's a fucking movie. Dumbass.

(6,399 posts)There's a lot to like in general with aesthetic, pacing, a mute lead character that expresses through sign language with minimal subtitles.
But you know what I really liked about it?
Taking place in the 50's as a fairy tale fable, it has our lead character, a single woman, spending part of her daily routine simply pleasuring herself in the bathtub before going to work. No heightened aspects about it, just another part of her routine in self care. It wasn't overly glamorized or anything but it made it clear she owned her sexuality.

(6,399 posts)I went with my 17 year old daughter (both my teenage kids watch raunchy rom-coms and more serious fare together to de-stigmatize sexuality since an early age) and she commented on what a great reinforcement to it that there's no shame to it.
I work in film criticism and it's really hard to remember any film that portrayed it this way, especially a US film, without it being all porn-music-y.

(146,309 posts)But he sure seems interested in cross-species sex, doesn't he. I wonder if there is an old story he needs to get off his chest?
In any case, as you said, it's a movie, not real life. And then there was Mary, who was reportedly impregnated by something that wasn't actually human. Since the product of that conception was a male, that Y chromosome came from somewhere. What of that, Kevin, you worshiper of the product of that strange relationship?

(25,857 posts)The best example is "The DaVinci Code". People who read the book or who saw the movie often do not get that it's a work of fiction.
I haven't seen "The Shape of Water" and I'm not interested in seeing it, but that's only because of my particular taste in movies. I have seen that it's gotten quite good reviews, so who knows? I might change my mind.

And what's that, clothes of mixed fabrics too? He's in violation of Lev 19:19.
I bet he's had shellfish too.
The Bible is a silly book but not nearly as silly as the picking and choosing christians use when deciding which verses to follow.

I suggest a surtax on the the super rich, and on corporate agriculture to pay for the policing.

(37,748 posts)Kevin Swanson know less about Leviticus than most people.
Chapter 20 of Leviticus is part of the greater list of rules, laws and policies (called the Holiness Code, or Priestly Code, by biblical academics) that are specific to the priests (the sons of Aaron) rather than the population of Israel (or in regards to gentiles) as a whole.
