Medicaid Work Requirements

I'm so furious, I'm ready to spit tacks, so I hope this post makes sense.

This is about Seema Verma and Trump and their condescending attitudes towards Medicaid recipients who aren't working.

First of all, let me say that I believe that, if someone is scamming the system, then they absolutely should be kicked off Medicaid. That goes without saying.

But ......

I can think of two scenarios that are pretty common where an able-bodied person should be allowed to receive Medicaid.

1. A single mom with small children. If Republicans want to institute work requirements, they'd better be prepared to provide free quality daycare to single moms, and that isn't cheap.

2. A parent or spouse who is a caregiver to an ill spouse or to a special-needs child. Do Republicans want these selfless family members to go work at McDonald's "because it is good for them" and leave a special needs family member to languish at home or in the care of strangers (which would be costly as well, and, again, who would pay for that)?

Republicans are so goddam clueless as to what people in the real world have to go through! I despise them all! They are so goddam sanctimonious and judgmental when they look at a poor person.

And, when Verma was in charge of Medicaid in Indiana, get this .... Medicaid recipients were required to deposit a small monthly premium into a bank account, say $20. And if they missed a payment, as punishment they were booted off Medicaid for six months! How does this help anyone??? "They need to have skin in the game," was the reason, I've read. Well I know some families to whom an extra $20 a month is a hard thing to come by. And the paperwork involved to keep track of all these folks proved to be so costly, it actually cost the state MORE to institute this stupid program than it did to just give poor people the Medicaid.

Again, I'm so mad I'm seeing red, and I hope my post makes sense.

He has a disabled wife and a 13 year old daughter. He has some health problems, but none of them are serious.

He has been trying unsuccessfully to get on disability for years. He is able to work and actually, he is very smart and knows how to do many things that most people haven't a clue how to do.

He recently quit a job he had that paid ~$15/hr. because he feared he'd lose his Medicaid.

I'm not sure how it all works, but if you have to quit a job to keep Medicaid, something is very very wrong. Maybe someone can clue me in as I am confused.

I shit you not, he was working blue collar jobs at the time, the kind that don't offer health care. My SIL was disabled with a medical condition that ended up costing her a leg. As a spouse of a working man, she couldn't get healthcare, so they got a divorce so she could sign up for our state program. They didn't actually split up, they stayed together until she passed, but basically they had to give up the deductions you get for being married on the fed income tax system in order to get care.

That was many years ago, of course, but I know that things have not improved in many states in this area.

They lived in California for awhile but they couldn't make a go of it so they moved to Oregon.

After they got there, their car was repossessed (not the first one either) and they seem to have bad luck I'd say.

The woman is working when she can but she is not well at all. I frankly don't know how she manages to work when she can but it is certainly not enough to pay the bills, that is for sure. She receives SSDI as she worked for a # of years before she fell ill. She is on Medicare/Medicaid and every other program that she is eligible for.

It is a sad sad situation and to think that you'd have to get a divorce in order to get medical care is beyond the pale! What a disgrace this country is!

So grotesque! I cannot stand it either!

I know of two sets of die-hard GOPers that live for money. It is all they care about, money and how to get MORE of it. It rules their lives which are pretty lousy IMO. If they did not have all of this money to boast about, I don't know what they'd do and my god do they ever know how to scam the system.

They make mobsters look like saints, that is what crooks these people are. I guess you must be a refined crook and know how to play the game as they seem to have it all from a suddenly paid off house worth $1 million to lots and lots of money coming in ranging from disability to pensions.

I want nothing to do with these people as they sicken me so!

Whether a person works or not should NOT be tied to whether that person or that person's family gets Medicaid or not, and in fact subverts the very reason Medicaid was created, to provide healthcare to people who don't have enough income. The most vulnerable in our society.

They have declaring war against the most vulnerable in our society

difference between "can work" and "can get hired." I worked with people who would have given their left arm to work, but they couldn't work in their area of experience because of some imperfection, so they were stuck. This happens a lot in blue collar, even nominally physical jobs. Guy is in water management, worked all his life for the water department. Gets injured. Job requirement is that he has to be able to lift his arms above his shoulders to get hired. He can't do that. Sorry, Charlie, you are out. He wants to work, he's depressed because he's not working, but he's screwed. Can't get disability because there's some job somewhere that he could do if only he could get hired. Sure, he can work for WalMart, but that doesn't feed the family, give benefits, or help him feel like a contributing member of society. It's just sad.

Working will likely push many people, including those living on SSDI, past the point where they are eligible for benefits.

At that point what politicians are really saying is "work full time or die".

These folks sound like the English merchant class during the Industrial Revolution who owning all the means of production paid so poorly that even the employed were starving and homeless.

Most Medicaid recipients work and those that don't are generally disabled or caring for someone disabled.

instead of our incredibly broken 6 or 8 part health care system - I can't even keep track.

everybody gets national health care, no special cutouts for anybody.
Nothing for politicians to use a cudgel against certain classes of people, be they veterans or elderly or poor or minority or religious or female etc., etc.

Republicans love our health care with everyone in silos where they can pit one against another. Like a giant hunger games.

with a right wing ninny a while ago. I brought up the scenario of needing child care if you're a single mom. She said, "you shouldn't depend on the government to do everything for you. Why can't your family help you out"?

I tried to explain to her that many parents of small children do not have family close by or able to help them with their child care. (that was certainly the case when my kids were small). My mom was a widow who had some severe health problems of her own, and my husband's parents were not healthy enough nor able to care for small children either. My only sister lived 60 miles away.

They just don't THINK!

A very large amount of people on Medicaid CANNOT work, therefore that is why they are on it. It also covers what Medicare will not cover when it comes to things like nursing homes, home health care, etc.

Fascist Trump and the rest of the GOP vermin simply want to leave helpless people to ROT.

They can shove their lying cries of "reform". It's ALL bullshit.

Why don't they consider raising the minimum wage, so that people can actually live on what they make?

or

Tell any business that has employees on welfare or Medicaid "You're not getting any tax breaks if you can't pay your employees a decent wage." And then DO IT.

Single payer is the best solution -- but you'll never hear any Republican go along with that. A poor person might get care for free, we certainly can't have that!
