They'd better be a damned badass leader.
The country is going to be left crippled in so many ways it's going to be a long hard slog to restore any kind of vitality or strength to the nation.
We will still have Republicans fighting to tear down any progress and blaming every Trump created catastrophe on the Democrats.
We will almost need a superhero if the ship is to be righted.
I hope we can find one.

(3,784 posts)............scream about the fact that everything isn't fixed within days of him/her taking office. And if they go back to their Obama playbook (Spoiler Alert: they will), they'll actively obstruct efforts to fix the damage and then scream about, "Why isn't this fixed yet?"
That's why the Democratic nominee needs to get out in front of this. Even during the campaign, keep reiterating, "Listen, it's going to take a LONG TIME to repair all the damage these A-holes have caused over the last 4 years. Longer if they're going to obstruct us at every turn, which we know they will. So get ready for a long, hard fight to reverse the damage these guys caused."

(985 posts)restoring tax rates because it's very hard to run for office on the platform of raising taxes. And, then, even if they can restore the revenue coming in, they're going to have a budget that was already is deficit and will then be missing hundreds of billions that wasn't collected over the previous 4 years.
In that environment, it will be hard to have the funds to do much and restore all the government agencies gutted under 4 years of Trump's bizzaro appointees. I just hope that Trump goes down in a disgracing enough way that the blue wave will be large enough to have the votes to do what needs to be done.

(578 posts)like it's almost impossible to increase taxes in this country. That to me is the biggest challenge which is raising taxes among the rich and being able to withstand the backlash that it will receive from the republicans and half of this country.

(21,786 posts)He got a tax increase in California when he was governor to fix the budget (before he fell under the malign sway of the Laffer curve and voodoo economics).

(1,822 posts)much of what Obama did to raise taxes wasnt increasing the tax rates but rather throwing things into the tax code like the Alternative Min tax and net investment tax. Things that hit the rich but unless you really know tax law, you had probably never heard about it. At this point I'd be fine with a minor bump in the corporate rate but close the loopholes. From my understanding loopholes were already getting corporate tax rates effectively down to 22% approx. Now they're bumped down to 21% + loopholes its likely they'll be around 10%. So there are things that can be down without just saying "we're raising taxes". Its a little underhanded, but hey at this point the Republicans have shown their hand.

(1,595 posts)But at this time... I think we need Adam Schiff. I like Bernie but he is weak on national security which will be the forefront of 2020 due to the damage Trump has done.

(8,380 posts)The one negative (not with me, but perhaps with some) is that he would be our first non-Christian presdent. My guess is that he would only turn off the Trumpie crazies anyway, and they are in the minority.

Otherwise the biggest threat will always appear to be the opposition party.

(18,634 posts)Diversity is one thing but that shouldn't be a guiding issue in the next presidential election.
We need intimidating strength and capability above all else.
If that's a white man, so be it.
If that's a black woman, so be it.

(3,784 posts)But he won't run, which I think is a travesty, but his wife has threatened to divorce him if he runs for President. And you know how it goes: happy wife, happy life.
Absent Sherrod Brown, the person who, to me, seems to be the most willing to throw down with the Republicans is Joe Kennedy. Although I must say that Schiff has been battling them pretty good recently too. I just wonder if he has the national recognition to make much of an impact on people who have never heard of him.

(18,634 posts)We need someone who is a great politician.
Someone who is a great persuader and manipulator of others.
Someone who is successful in law enforcement probably doesn't fit that mold.

(68,582 posts)And we need to support our president...not matter what even if they can't get single payer...we would not be in this position if Obama had received support in 10...six years of his presidency...a big fat 0 because of the whiners who couldn't get over not getting single payer.

(10,271 posts)That the American people said 'you know what, we want somebody smart right now MORE than we want somebody white'.
And the whiplash from the Deplorables was to do exactly the OPPOSITE of that because that's how butthurt they were.
As Mueller starts unsealing more, and more important indictments, we're all gonna get to see what the
end - stage of Obama Derangement Syndrome looks like...and it won't be pretty. The prion disease will either be cured and the brainwashing undone, or it will kill the patient.
No other outcome, as far as I can tell.

(18,634 posts)Remember how he tried to honestly bring Republicans into discussions at the beginning? It turned out that this was the wrong strategy.
It's sad to say but I think a sly, manipulative sob might have been what we needed back then and also what we need now. You can't play nice with these people.
