Think Progress: Group Calls On Boehner To Kick Bachmann Off Intel Committee

Last edited Mon Jul 23, 2012, 06:23 PM - Edit history (1)

Group Calls On Boehner To Kick Bachmann Off Intel Committee | The progressive group People for the American Way today called on House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) to remove Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) from her post on the House Intelligence Committee after suggesting that U.S. government employees are helping the Muslim Brotherhood infiltrate the U.S. government. PFAW noted that Boehner had criticized Bachmann for her witch hunt and that Huma Abedin, top aide to Secretary of State Hilary Clinton whom Bachmann named as part of the alleged conspiracy, was put under police protection because of receiving threats. “Members of the House Intelligence Committee are entrusted with classified information that affects the safety and security of all Americans,” said PFAW president Michael Keegan. “That information should not be in the hands of anyone with such a disregard for honesty, misunderstanding of national security, and lack of respect for her fellow public servants.”

Bachmann, Gaffney, and the GOP’s Anti-Muslim Culture of Conspiracy

Where did Michele Bachmann get the idea that Muslim radicals have infiltrated the highest levels of government? Look no further than activist Frank Gaffney, says Jonathan Kay.

Earlier this month, Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) appeared on the FOX Business show Money Rocks to make the case for depriving the children of immigrants of their 14th Amendment rights. Gohmert claimed that on a recent airplane trip to the Middle East, one of his traveling companions had struck up a conversation with a grandmother who described her family's involvement in a Hamas plot to send pregnant women to the United States. Gohmert summarized the lesson for viewers this way: "We're bringing them over here on tourist visas, some illegally, letting them be born here and saying, 'This is an American citizen. So come back in 20, 25 years when you're ready to blow us up.'"

It's a bizarre story. But the fact that he's prepared to cite it as a basis for American immigration reform supplies some useful context for what happened two weeks later, when Gohmert joined four other Republican members of Congress, including Michele Bachmann, in asking the Department of Defense, the State Department, and other departments to investigate whether the U.S. government is being infiltrated by Muslim extremists.

In particular, the five Republicans singled out Huma Abedin, a long-time aide to Hillary Clinton, in their letter to the State Department. Abedin, the letter noted, "has three family members—her late father, her mother, and her brother—connected to Muslim Brotherhood operatives and/or organizations. Her position provides her with routine access to the Secretary and to policy-making."

In this odd age, partisan hysteria and conspiracy theories have become a common feature of the American political landscape. But the anti-Abedin attack was too much even for fellow Republicans. To his credit, Sen. John McCain publicly declared that the letter constituted "an unwarranted and unfounded attack on an honorable woman, a dedicated American, and a loyal public servant." (He also debunked its factual claims.) Ed Rollins, Bachmann's former campaign chief, wrote an op-ed for FOX calling his old boss' attack on Abedin "extreme," "dishonest," and "vicious."

It's no longer free speech when you endanger someone's life, and she does it ALL the time.

Answer:

In the United States, the House of Representatives may impeach the President, Vice-President, Federal judges (including Supreme Court justices) and other "civil officers," such as cabinet members. Congress has chosen to interpret "civil officers" as anyone the President appoints.

In 1799, Congress determined Senators and Representatives cannot be impeached.

For some reason there is more than one impeachment page on Wiki.

This one shows that it has been done, and might be possible again.

Thanks, by the way.

The problem with getting rid of her, is that anything that is done will simply embolden the bagger nation she represents. They have whining patriot victim syndrome, with Glen Beck telling them how they are being mistreated daily. Anything done against her in the media, only feeds the bonfire of the crazymakers.

Have them meet with her privately. There should be a way for Boehner or the members of the intelligence committee to talk to her in private without making this a media story, so that she and the baggers profit from it.

We had a wacky Republican state senator who went off the rails like this and eventuallya few censures were made, but they weren't publicized. It came out later when she decided to seek other ways of grifting and left the legislature to be a full-time wack job in private and business life.

Don't feed the trolls, they live on attention. JMHO.

to throw her off of the "intelligence committee"? How did she get on it? Must not need to take an IQ test.
