Congress let CHIPs funding expire 101 days ago, and its a national disgrace

Vox
It would cost $800 million to extend kids’ health insurance. That’s 0.1 percent of the price of the tax overhaul.

Republicans in Congress have said that extending CHIP costs too much. At the time, the estimated cost was $8 billion — and it has since dropped to $800 million.

“The reason CHIP is having trouble [passing] is because we don’t have money anymore,” Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT), who chairs the Senate Finance Committee, said in early December. “We just add more and more spending and more and more spending, and you can look at the rest of the bill for the more and more spending.” But just days after Hatch said this, Republicans passed tax cuts worth $1.5 trillion that aren’t paid for at all. Instead, they piled the cost onto the federal deficit by more than a trillion dollars. The price of extending CHIP is 0.1 percent of the cost of the tax bill.

When it comes to extending tax cuts to wealthy Americans and corporations, there’s apparently no need to find a way to pay for it. The money is just there, even if it means going into debt. When it comes to giving kids health insurance, the calculus is the opposite.
