He could still have gotten the ar 15 under the ban,it just wouldn't have had a bayonet mount,or collapsible stock.

ETA. He could have bought a "pre-ban" 100rnd mag under the ban,though it would have costa several hundred dollars.

and became the most popular civilian centerfire rifles in the United States some time between 1994 and 2004, as a direct result of the non-ban.

Two, over-10-round magazines were never banned either; importation of the hundreds(?) of millions of extant STANAG magazines worldwide was legal 1994-2004, and prices on standard 30- and 20-round AR magazines were quite reasonable after the initial panic wore off in 1994-1995. Beta-C drums (the 100-rounders) were rare and expensive but still legal and available as well, though they were jam-prone range toys then just like they are now.
