Trump Slump - job creation numbers weak in Trump's first year.

Well, it looks like the #TrumpSlump was in full effect in Trump’s first year. Hiring was the worst it was since 2010 when America was coming out of The Great Recession. Don’t believe what you hear in the media or what Trump tweets, these numbers are barely above break even based on population growth. However, I’ve already heard CNN touting the job numbers for the year. And, Trump has been touting the jobs numbers each month like crazy because most people don’t know they’re mediocre – 2 million jobs sounds great after all – it’s a big number.

According to economists, the US economy needs to create 150,000 to 175,000 jobs a month to break even with population growth, or 1,800,000 to 2,100,000 per year.

Based on actual numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, I came up with the following

In 2011, we had 2,091,000 jobs created
In 2012, that number was 2,142,000 jobs
In 2013, that number grew to 2,302,000 jobs
In 2014, the economy created a whopping 2,998,000 jobs
In 2015, it was a very good 2,713,000 jobs
In 2016, Obama’s last year, it was 2,240,000 jobs

In Trump’s first year, it was a meager 2,055,000, or at the upper-end of the “break even” range.

I realize that the president has little control over private sector job creation. But, for better or worse, the president gets credit for good jobs numbers, and they get penalized for bad ones.

However, Trump has been selling his jobs numbers as fantastic, and the media has seemingly gone along with him. The reality is different.

When Trump did brag about the economy, our side was quick to point out that because it was his first year, and he hadn't done anything - really, not a damn thing - that the credit should go to Obama.

Are we able to reconcile these statements somehow - good economy due to Obama, but look at the jobs creation decrease, and that's on Trump?

And democrats are disputing that he's behind that as we're still under Obama's last budget, but at the same time, we're blaming him for jobs going down. Are we intellectually honest in doing this?

The good economy is still because of policies put into place by Obama during his tenure – the solid GDP growth and the good performance of the stock market. However, the weakening job growth is a sign that the economy could be headed south. Did the private sector slow down hiring in anticipation of Trump and Republicans having a negative effect on the economy? Have sectors been negatively affected by Trump (i.e., tourism/hotels; healthcare over the uncertainty about Obamacare’s repeal) You can’t tell anything for certain, but 80-90 years of history have shown that the economy tends to be better with Democrats in the Oval Office. So, is the economy slowing down jobs wise because of Trump? History would say yes.
