I ask because today someone I thought I knew pretty well told me she voted for Trump. She said it made her sick that she had to vote for him, but she is a Republican and 'she had no choice'.

(27,830 posts)and if they didn't have so many winner-take-all primaries and caucuses. That screwed them. If the results had been split more fairly, a clear contender would likely have emerged. Instead, they all got pushed out early.

Is this poll an attempt to justify the Republican vote for Trump?

(6,856 posts)Made up my mind the moment he demonized Mexicans. He could never overcome that if he were to back every single one of my pet policies. That kind of vicious talk damages children permanently.

(3,608 posts)If Trashbag was the Dem nominee ( in mirror mirror universe) and say Kasich was the R nominee (for example) ...I would have to vote for Kasich JUST to stop the awful "Dem Donald" I would feel it was my duty to try to stop this person from being President.....I couldn't even just stay home because it is just THAT IMPORTANT that this person does not get anywhere near the White Trash House.
I still can't believe this fucking con artist is DOTUS and has put together the most corrupt SHAMINISTRATION that has ever existed in this country. I don't even know much History about Prez's and their cabinets...but I'm going out on a limb here.
MOST CORRUPT EVER. So yes he will be the biggest and best at something after all.

(2,807 posts)There are literally thousands of political powers on this planet, but a mere few that would allow Donald Trump a prominent place.
Only the most hateful, the most foolish, the most propagandized would give Donald Trump the time of day. And Republicans, they love him.
I think the GOP, right here today in America, is the 2nd most propagandized people (behind only North Korea) in this planet's history.

(25,895 posts)In what alternate universe would he have run as a Democrat?
And your friend who said she had no choice but to vote for him, since she's a Republican and he was the Republican nominee, is a good illustration of much of what is wrong with our political process.
Too many people do not take a close look at the candidates. We all should. Of course, it is that close looking that made a lot of Democrats unhappy with Hillary Clinton, but we'll gloss over that for now. In a perfect world we'd have no political parties, just candidates and elected people who do their best to fulfill their campaign promises. Which is what it was like in the first decade or so of this country, but very quickly political parties got established, and we wound up with the system we have now.
But your question does very much bring up the question of just how far any of us should be willing to go to support our party's nominee.

(54,065 posts)He could never bullshit his way into the Democratic nomination. We don't have the same history of a party leadership lying to us and ginning up bogus racial resentments so that we'd vote against our own economic interests.
If, say, a John Edwards type managed to get the Democratic nomination, I'd probably vote for him. But Edwards, while about as close to a Trump as a liberal Dem could get, is still not a fair parallel to Trump. He would still have to perform as a responsible manager of the government and economy. Ultimately, the big cultural difference between us and them is that Democrats want a strong business manager in charge of the Executive Branch because we take government seriously, but Republicans want a strong cheerleader to inspire them to individual greatness, which will somehow, eventually, magically fix all social problems and auto-balance the budget.

(54,065 posts)It hurt, but we tend to be better at demanding actual ethical performance, rather than just lip service from our leaders.

(14,565 posts)Trump would be an asshole but he'd be an asshole arguing our policies. The premise of this poll mandates that he would have had to veer 180 from everything we saw during the primaries, to win a Democratic nomination. How is he going to get there by championing anti-immigration, and with a birther record, etc. etc?
No chance. Throw away everything known about Trump in the past decade or so. This poll requires an application of situational influence. If there is anything I know, it is situational influence. For Trump to win our nomination he would have had to show sustained loyalty to our side for at least 10-15 years, dating to when Hillary became senator and Bill left office.
Hillary described Trump as a puppet. He hated it. Couldn't restrain himself. That's because he knows there is plenty of truth to it. Reportedly he is influenced by the last person who tried to persuade him.
To gain our nod he would have been a long held puppet.
Trump loves to win...to taunt. He would have been taunting the other side.

(11,804 posts)Probably not. And I think it's fair to say that we've seen more of the real Donald Trump over the last few years. That said if he had run as a Democrat and espoused Democratic ideals I might have been taken in a few years ago.

My answer is yes. I think everyone on DU would answer yes to that.
