I'm so f'ing cold my heat is blasting at 70!!!! I NEVER do that! BRRRRR! It's currently 28 degrees!
Are you keeping warm? What's your temp?

(11,629 posts)It's not as cold as it was yesterday.
We set the thermostat at 62 during the day and 68 during the evening.

(34,465 posts)73, usually. I freeze at lower temps. Part of my house is old brick with plaster interior walls, that cant be insulated, so it can be 10 degrees colder in several rooms.
Outside it is in the teens and dropping.

(21,946 posts)We have the thermostat set at 74 and the temp says 74.

(4,429 posts)My thermostat is set to 51 degrees . (That's pretty much where I keep it)
We're in S. VT.
64 when the wife's not visiting her mother.
78 F in the summer. 81 F if we have a dehumidifier and the wife's here. 82 F otherwise.
Result is that we have maybe 10 heating days a year and the AC isn't on from mid-October until May most years. So no-energy days > energy-use days.
Neighbors think $200/month electric bill is normal. I think $100 is insanely high.
"Green" and "cheap" coincide very nicely and make an unbeatable combination.
That seems too cold for me.. do you have another heat source? Being a native Austinite we have a very low tolerance for cold!

I am perfectly fine with putting on a sweater and a shawl in the winter. Totally dont mind a little sweat in the summer.

(717 posts)We would usually have it at 70 but the wind coming off the lake could cut you in half.

(9,353 posts)It is currently 20. Thats the highest its been in a week! I have socks on and multiple layers and a shawl. The dog is sleeping with a huge blanket.
My poor little oil burner is running non-stop.
Just heard that this weekend it will be going down to 5. I wont be here then so just hope the pipes dont freeze while I am away.
Will leave the faucets running.
Fat lot of good that will do if the power goes out. I have a well pump.
janterry
(4,429 posts)and drain it. I had heard that people put antifreeze into the toilets?
Not sure you want to go that far, but......it's an option to just shut it off and drain the lines.

Just not feasible for short sessions away.
Oh, well. Need to finally sell the house. Wish I didnt love it so much.

(21,174 posts)The heater is on 72 degrees. But its usually colder here. Normally would be 50 degrees.
I admire, but honestly dont envy you folks on the east coast. My best advice is layer with clothes and snuggle up with a blanket, a pet or someone you love and stay warm.

(9,732 posts)and it was down to around 8 degrees early this A.M. My thermostat is set at 68 degrees. The furnace never stops running. I have closed off all but three downstairs rooms. It's my grandfather's old house, finished in 1911, and not built for warmth. Brrr.............!!
But it's supposed to warm up starting tomorrow. I hope it will!

(3,608 posts)but the heat just can't keep up...it's supposed to get even colder over the weekend for many of us. Saturday, 13 for the high, 4 for the low.

Truth be told it's too hot in my room...seriously hot. I have to open a window and run humidifiers because my sinuses get dried out.
Now I don't want you to mistake this for me complaining because I'm not. In ALL of my apartments there has been heating issues so this is the first time I'm warm in winter consistently in my adult life. IT'S GREAT.

(31,399 posts)Practically a heat wave. Wind chills have been single digits last couple of days. Expecting winter mix of snow/sleet/ice tomorrow here in eastern NC and the beach.
Thermostat set at 66 for the night and 68 in the day as usual.
Wearing a lot of layers when I go out to walk the dog.

I have a programmable thermostat that I bought last year (very lightly used from Amazon). I set it for 62 during the day (when I'm at work), 70 in the late afternoon until the late evening, then 66 during sleepytime.
I'm comfortable when I get home and I save energy when I'm away. Only problem the last week has been that it's been so cold that even after 5 hours the temp inside hasn't gotten up to 70! But it's warm enough.

(33,018 posts)I raised the house thermo from it's usual winter setting of 61. I sleep under 2 cats wearing a long sleeved thermal, baggy sleep shorts and a pair of socks. Daytime, jeans & a different thermal shirt.

(25,491 posts)Our house is poorly insulated. We've got large drafty windows and living areas that face north. Never get around to doing much about it cuz I'm more worried about keeping this place cool in summer.
This cold snap will pass and I will be cleaning up my freeze damaged plants. I worry about my garden and hope any loss is temporary.

(16,254 posts)We are headed back down to -13, but that beats the negative temps for the last two nights. My new heat pump couldn't keep up (don't want to see my bill) and was usually 3 to 7 degrees below the setting, but with 9 degrees, it is finally reaching temps of 72 and no drafts. I was running a faucet in one bathroom, but I think it will be OK. Having just downsized, I haven't gone through a frigid winter in this house or lived with a heat pump. If we don't hit the -30 they forecast a couple days ago, I think I'll come through this spell in good shape.

(2,176 posts)The heat tape died and it was -2 when I got up. It will be colder tonight because there are no clouds. So the faucets will be dripping, all cabinets under sinks open, and I insulated the pipes under the house. Should all be good!

(11,949 posts)I am the rare person here who has gas heat rather than a heat pump. And I love it because it heats the house up in 15 minutes. Sleep at 68. Heat on in the morning to shower at 74 then back to 65 while we are working. We have a low power bill in the winter.
Yall stay warm up in yankee land. Or better yet, come visit us. Or move here. We are close to being blue. Add some good northern democrats to our recently arrived Puerto Rican residents and we will be bright blue!

(10,952 posts)I have had to drip my kitchen faucet for several days and run the heating system a lot higher then normal. I am ready for summer. I don't own a furnace in the conventional sense, I heat with wood, mostly my own, which I haul out from the "back 10".
I did buy a load of logs once for $650, which lasted for about 3 years.
I do have electric baseboard installed, but I only use it as a backup or when it is below freezing and I know I will be away for more than 24 hours.

(10,836 posts)it's 19 degrees. Tomorrow we're expecting a heat wave--30 degrees. The high today was 24.
According to Rachael, the real cold is coming for a blast this weekend.

My husband had to call AAA today just to get out of the driveway; battery totally drained. The driver said there were stalled, dead cars everywhere.

(5,180 posts)I walked the dog in full sun at 21 this afternoon. Impossible to stay warm.
I have old baseboard heaters in this old farmhouse, but they still work, thank goodness.
Also have a couple of portable heaters running. My electric bill will be heavenly.
Probably 65 degrees in the big room and Kitchen where I spend the most time.
Very drafty and thin pane glass windows. Pet doors do not help.
Maybe 55 to 60 in the rest of the House.
Had to pass on an out of town trip to babysit this house, and keep the pipes dripping.
I have heat lamps on in the basement pointed at the pipes.
Dog and cats have pad heaters or heated room.

(1,231 posts)14 at 9:30pm. Its been colder than normal, and some low wind chills, so keeping it at 70 24/7 while were in deep freeze. Normal cold temps high 20s and above, I do lower heat when Im gone. Rear faces south so can warm house up decently. But when its this cold, just doesnt happen until we get longer days. And when I want to watch the big tv in the basement, Ill jack it up to 72 while Im down there.
Im always struck by folks who post from the really cold Northeast and Midwest how low they keep their heat in these current temps. Id be so nervous about pipes bursting, etc. We get that a lot even here. But, with natural gas, I have to say, my bill will be higher but it wont put me in the poor house. Maybe $30-$40 higher on next bill, esp since I was also home for the holidays for last two weeks but in 18 years its never doubled or anything outrageous during these cold snaps. Very fortunate.
My cousin lives outside Albany. During a MLK visit some years ago, I asked her what she keeps her thermostat on. We had highs of maybe 5 that weekend. She said when it gets that cold and lower, they keep the house at 72/73 nonstop, dont bother to lower it. I appreciated what that big oil tank in the basement must cost them every winter, but obviously they can afford it.

(1,231 posts)Dropping like a rock out there, but calm winds, so small bonus there...Wonder if well see a dusting with this storm...reports getting updated constantly. Winter weather is just the worst to predict, even these days it seems. Noreasters here in the mid-Atlantic are fickle..They either love ya or leave ya.

(34,136 posts)Plus I have on fleece pants, and a long fleece robe. I'm still COLD with my nose running and bleeding from the dry air.
Outside we have winter storm warnings - it will get down to 27 F with rain, sleet and snow. All this week it will be in the 40s during the day and 20s at night - coldest night will be 24.
That may not sound too bad for those who live up north, but I am outside Tallahassee, Florida and we seldom get this kind of weather, especially with it lasting so long.
I had an appointment for my first cardio rehab session tomorrow. They called today - their building will be closed in the morning and they may not open even after noon. I changed my appointment to next Monday. It will be chilly and rainy according to forecasts, but not as bad as tonight.
Edited to add - the rest of the house is heated to 72 with the bathroom heated to 78 also. The 72 temp is the default automatic thermostat setting. The hall stays about right but this end of the house gets chilly in the winter. I have one of those portable oil radiators to heat the library.

My sister had Reynaud's - once when they gave her a cold IV the blood in that arm stopped flowing completely. My Mom and all my sisters are intolerant to cold - that's why we all live in Florida. I live furthest north of any of us and sometimes regret it.

(574 posts)It broke last December. I bought a space heater with a blower and thermostat then acquired another in the spring. My husband passed away Oct '16 So it's just my girls and I. I dumped about $400 into the furnace in the fall. One guy that tried to fix it hooked something up backwards and ruined caused other parts to fail. It needs one $400.00 part then it should be ok. The outside temp is around 15° but right now inside it is 64° because we've had the dryer running. So It's not bad. We have layers on. It will motivate the kids to do well in school I hope.

It is on a pier and beam foundation. Doors don't close properly. Rodent holes in some doors. Outdoor air comes up through the floorboards. Their heater broke, landlord didn't want to fix it. We bought them portable heaters.
I would never want to have a pier and beam foundation.
