I know that what happened at Penn St is unmatched by anything. It is over for Penn St. football. No H.S. player in his right mind will go there. They have paid the ultimate price and rightfully so. What I would now like to see is the NCAA remove every win from a coach and collage that have allowed a player to play after committing a crime. I think you would be surprised at how many the big high profile teams like Mr. Bowdens would loose games. If a player commits a crime he would be banded from collage football forever and any game that the offender played in, and the team won, they would forfeit that win. Lets continue the cleanup in collage football

(10,960 posts)That doesn't make Paterno a good man. The correlation between goodness and football wins is weak.
But since we have video and old newspapers and such... Paterno did coach those wins.

(17,863 posts)No reason that those newspapers and videos can't be dropped down the memory hole (sarcasm).
An asterisk to sports people is a big thing - remember Roger Marris. Any discussion about wins and Paterno will have to include whether you accept the wins were vacated. I don't see it as Orwellian at all, but probably the most appropriate penalty handed out. No doubt the cover up went on so that Paterno would get the wins record. That record has turned to ashes.
The big question is will the penalties change the culture of college football. I think they will help some. Also PSU and the administrators are still subject to civil action which will add more dollars that will have to be paid out. The big three administrators are all going to face criminal action as well. Paterno is dead and nothing can be done to him. As far as I can tell everyone now associated with the football program had nothing to do with the cover up. The players are free to leave the university and take scholarships at other school without any penalty. The athletes that choose to stay will still have a PSU education paid for by the scholarship.
All in all a great decision by the NCAA. Going forward other organizations need to take action as well. For starters any board member who agreed to the shameful renegotiation of Paterno's contract needs to be axed along with those others who failed in their roles in the past.

(35,015 posts)First, let me say that I wholeheartedly agree with the NCAA's penalties, and I was happy to see Paterno's statue go away....I also wish they'd remove his name from everything on campus. It's time to heal and move forward, leaving Paterno behind.
The school itself though - the academics - are not done. I will always feel fortunate I was able to get a top notch education and will always have great memories of the wonderful professors and other students who impacted my life.
The lesson to be learned is that football should not be the be-all end-all for a college, and isn't, even though to the public it seems that way, especially when the football program is highly successful.
Today, I am just really sad.

(1,153 posts)Football is dead but the teaching part will survive. A coach never wins a game. They don`t score a touchdown or throw a pass. Those kids that played during those years just had part of their personal sport history destroyed and all of them were innocent. No one will want to play there again. It is a death sentence for the team and it`s players that had nothing to do with any of this. One more thing. Paterno was implicated in this cover up but will never have his day in court just like the players all those years will have no say. I am not saying that Paterno would be found not guilty. It`s just that we will never know. You can take that 60 million and give it to the victims but that will not heals their wounds. We need to help these people as much as we can. The list of victims in this mess has gotten longer.

(5,178 posts)At some point the reality of climate change has to overshadow rushing statistics and batting averages. At some point lessening the suffering of others and helpless animals has to mean more to us than a winning streak or how high someone can jump.
If I sit down and try to think of ways we could cut back on releasing so much pollution into the atmosphere the elimination of sporting events seems like an easy choice.
The amount of combined emissions created from the NFL & MLB down to a kids soccer team in this country must be staggering.
Eventually it will all come crashing down. The only choice is our legacy. Will it be one of playing games or will it be one of getting serious and facing the future. Will we be known as the truly greatest generation or will we be another ring tosser.

(26,076 posts)With some terrific departments.
The actual ACADEMIC part, why colleges and universities exist, will still be intact. I attended a school with no football team, but we had plenty of "smaller sports" and IM sports to watch, and had just as much fun as anyone at a football game.
