Newsweek posted and deleted a tweet on Monday that referenced the death of Martin Luther King Jr. after his daughter called out the publication for being thoughtless.
The post included a photo of the civil rights leader in his casket and the caption Has anybody here seen my old friend Martin? The quote is from Abraham, Martin and Jack, a song Dick Holler wrote in 1968 to memorialize the lives of Abraham Lincoln, MLK, former President John F. Kennedy and his brother Robert ― all of whom were assassinated after promoting social change.
The publication also linked to an article listing several upcoming milestones, including the 50-year anniversary of the assassination of MLK.
Why, @Newsweek? Wow, Bernice King tweeted in response. Many Twitter users replied to her, agreeing that Newsweeks post was insensitive.

I am glad they were called out and deleted. It should be about his life's work and not him in a casket.

(42,641 posts)This type of thing reduces King's entire life work and legacy to his martyrdom and funeral.
Better would have been an article that focuses on him linking capitalism, war, and racism. But that would have required actual critical analysis.

They make it all about his death and not his life. Disgusting.

(9,350 posts)She was right to call them out. It is possible that it would be accirate to say that tweet was evil. It could even be seen as mocking his death. That is a tweet I would expect to see coming from a white supremacist group. I somewhat think the King family should sue Newsweek.

(82,849 posts)Some folks might think it insensitive to re-run the review for Our American Cousin on Lincoln's birthday with the caption, "Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, what did you think of the play?"
Fuckin' dumbasses.
