(13,390 posts)The American dream is BS. The existing economic inequality is not going away. Dems need to work on making the economic disadvantages tolerable and livable. FDR's new deal included basic incomes that allowed people to secure housing and basic necessities. Democrats expanded on it with promoting food security and health care.
As poor people are suffering, many middle class people fear getting poorer.
Real "welfare" reform would mean restoration and expansion.
Expansion of SS benefits to ensure that people who are feeling the effects of physically demanding labor be able to retire early rather than be forced into SSDI where work and income penalties prevent opportunities to earn some extra money.
It's not only jobs that have been shipped overseas. It is professions. As in employment people thought they would provide an income to support a family, send their kids to college, retire. Factory workers keep losing professions.
Along with miners who are losing their jobs, those professional workers should have access to at least a minimum income without the stringent regulations of unemployment.
Rather than tax credits, Dems should look towards providing an actual steady income that makes poverty more tolerable.

(11,238 posts)To me, it references the country as it is now, under Republicans. It implies that things won't improve a whole lot under Democrats, but they'll get a little better. Yaaaay, I guess.
I mean, the contrast couldn't be starker. Trump constantly hammering home the concept of GREAT, with all its sweeping connotations & call to glory, and we settle on the meek concept of 'better'.

(13,390 posts)Things are not going to get measurably better in terms of American dream thinking any time soon.
People are starving. Are Dems going to promise fine dining? Should they promise houses with swimming pools? Expensive cars?
Or maybe a "better deal" could mean safety and security for all. Housing, food, healthcare and a minimum basic income that provides for necessities might feel like a luxury to homeless folks. Or people who fear an economic demise and strategize their food consumption carefully.
FDR did not promise luxury. But the Democratic move right incluuded individualism and the incessant American dream lie. Trump's lie about making America great includes the assumption that the playing field is level. Racism is built into that assumption.
We really need to admit that inclusive greatness is not possible when so many people are suffering. Trump lied. Some Democrats got on board and lied. We need to admit it, and offer some basic economic security for more of our citizens.
Come on, man. I'm trying to cook squid.. It takes a delicate hand to do that..

(6,252 posts)I would ask what is right with it?
It implies so much weakness and negativity it is embarrassing.
Democrats don't need to provide a 'Deal', we aren't selling cars and this isn't the 1930's.
It assumes there is a plan already in place - there is not.
The word 'Better' is noncommittal.
It assumes the world that President Obama left .45 was so bad that it needed reworking into its current state.
Should I continue?

(58,785 posts)might take more from the Republicans than their professional brainwashers.
May I offer to you: A 28-year-old Latino, Omar Navarro, who plans to rid us of 78-year-old Maxine. He has big money behind him this time.
Now a group of major GOP donors that spent millions on ads to elect President Trump also plans to take on the Los Angeles congresswoman in next year's midterm election.
"I had faith after Trump won that ... we could topple someone like Maxine and win," said the 28-year-old former car salesman who grew up in the district. ...
Controversial former Sheriff Arpaio, who was convicted of a crime related to alleged racial profiling of Latinos and pardoned by Trump, hosted a $125-a-ticket fundraiser for Navarro at Trump National Golf Club in Rancho Palos Verdes last month. The event ended with a skit in which a Waters impersonator who was wearing a wig pretended to attack conservative musician Joy Villa. Navarro intervened and pulled off the Waters wig as the dozen or so attendees applauded.
The skit appears to reference an episode from last spring, when now-ousted Fox News host Bill O'Reilly said he was too distracted by Waters' "James Brown wig" hair to hear the congresswoman's speech on the House floor about patriotism under Trump. Waters response to O'Reilly, "I'm a strong black woman, and I cannot be intimidated," went viral.

(58,785 posts)While I was looking for a comment, I found this instead:
Here's a Daily Beast article on Navarro's "utterly strange, motley crew," tho.
Why all these figures have flocked to Navarro is not entirely clear. A 28-year-old resident of Torrance, California, Navarro hasnt held elected office before. But not for lack of trying. He ran against Waters in 2016, only to lose by more than 50 pointsa blistering defeat that he spun into a positive, proclaiming that he had won an outstanding 25%! of the vote in a predominantly Democratic district.
What seems to be his biggest draw is that he is, simply, there in L.A running against Waters, the bete noire of the Trumpites, who has called repeatedly for the presidents impeachment and openly questioned his sanity.
Youve got the old, horrible, senile, entrenched, crazy lady, vs. a real American, as InfoWars Alex Jones put it during an interview segment with Navarro in May. Throw her ass out!
Lol. She's going to hand this one his ass. But that she's become a nationwide target of enmity suggests some real effort will be made to satisfy the lusts of the red in tooth and claw.

Enough with the slogans. Run candidates in EVERY race, on local issues. Take back the House and Senate, then impeach.
