12 hours standing in a pen. In cold weather. I wouldn't do it in warm weather.

(32,036 posts)And I heard from a friend who works in NYC you'd better watch out for pickpockets down there on New Year's Eve.

(46,753 posts)I want to rent out a room with a balcony over Time's Square on New Year's Eve and throw out mittens and scarves to the people below. Anything to keep the revelry going.

(20,718 posts)The people who do well work over the square, so, they don't have to take out a mortgage to watch with warm, indoor plumbing.

(20,718 posts)no bathrooms. It's nuts.
I've heard stories about public urination right into the street, but I haven't been there to see it personally.
I'm gonna assume there are no Depends on the shelves in that neighborhood.....

(6,367 posts)Or do they let them loose at some point? Looks like people are free to walk down the sidewalks and the cross streets... so do they have to leave at some point? The logistics of this is... confusing... but compelling at the same time.

(20,718 posts)re-admittance if you leave. Having been to NYC marches and protests, I can also tell you that the rules change without warning: The police are given sudden, new directions through their radios, and what you thought was happening stops or changes.
So, it's all just wild and out of control. No way would I ever attempt it.

(11,996 posts)No closer, and not much moving around once its filling up. Been on the square a couple times, no way would I do it without a cozy office to return to anytime I wanted.

If you ever have visited then you know that all of the city smells like urine.

(4,492 posts)ETA when I go to events like this I simply don't drink anything.
When I went to the Women's March, I didn't have any water until I was back at Penn Station.

(63,221 posts)wanted to do. I hate the cold, I hate crowds and I hate not having my conveniences (liquids - I am always very thirsty - and bathroom facilities). New Year's Eve isn't really my favorite holiday anyway.
I'm just going to order some Chinese food and watch movies tonight. I'm sick, so I might not even make it to midnight.
