(2,574 posts)There's a reason Repugs are so big on STEM and against any liberal arts. Only one promotes political, intellectual, empathic tools of critical analysis.
I always felt sorry for those narrowly educated & focused engineering students including industrial engineers, which was essentially the undergrad business degree.
The late sixties was such an exciting, experimental fulfilling time to be a student, and they missed it all.
Most of them ending up working for some form of the MIC the rest of their lives and always voting Republican. No info in no info out.

(25,905 posts)are not like the ones you're describing.
My own son, currently in a PhD program in physics and astronomy, formerly in engineering, is extremely liberal. I think we raised him right.
stuffmatters
(2,574 posts)I like to think some of that had to do with my influence. Because he'd really never had a liberal arts education, much interest in politics or resisting the government. I was always so proud of him for evolving.

If there is one thing that defines being a Republican in this country, it is their hatred of science, and by extension, engineering.
My son is an engineering student. He's brilliant and hard working human being, deeply concerned about the fate of the world.
I was around in the late sixties, and your characterization of that generation - my generation - is pure bullshit.
Fat old baby boomer white men - my demographic by the way - are responsible for putting these assholes in power.

(16,388 posts)Because the US tech voted for Trump. They used to do biopsies together until the doc found out how the tech voted. I know it hurt the tech's feelings, and I don't even know if it's legal, but I do get the doc's concern. I've never in my life seen anything like what's going on now.

(17,865 posts)Politics should not get in the way of getting the job done. Spend 10 minutes at lunch talking about it and get back to work.
Especially concerning since it is patient care. My daughter is a new nurse, and she avoids talking politics with coworkers. They talk about super hero and science fiction movies instead.

(3,145 posts)Were I to discover that my physician refused to work with an otherwise competent UT because something as petty as how they voted, it would call that physician's judgment and professionalism into question enough for me to change doctors.
Laffy Kat
(16,388 posts)The physician was calling the US's judgement into question due to her vote. I'm staying out of it. As far as I'm concerned it's among the US tech, the physician, HR, and the union. (I really don't care for the US tech either, although I have no idea how competent she is or isn't in her job; I suspect there is something else going on here.)

(28,811 posts)but i haven't had the same experience. racist, republican before human, brainwashed by fox, etc. greed and the belief that everyone is just as greedy as they are to ease their conscience. but i definitely know some who are happy people. they're co-workers and members of my family.
what i don't know is how many of them have seen the error of their ways. poll numbers suggest that at least some are, but if they're still watching fox and worshipping trump as if he is literally their ticket to heaven, they'll never acknowledge how much damage he has done and does every single day.

(5,803 posts)1929 repeats. I wonder whether he has thought of that.
dump had just been just coasting on the economy he inherited from President Obama. Now, with the artificial stimulus from the tax scam, IMHO the markets are gonna exhibit climax buying. No mystery what happens after that.
People who vote a certain way solely because they think they will benefit--when that benefit comes at the expense of others--are, in my experience, cold, selfish assholes inside, no matter how civil the exterior. And, the fact that that their increased $$$ comes from e.g. taking medical care from children and seniors is something they should think about.
The people I know who voted for dump are either brainwashed by flush limpballs, selfish racists, or stupid, ignorant racists.

(53,918 posts)That's a 120% increase during Obama's administration and the increase since trump took over is just a continuation of the bull market Obama started.
Remember it cratered under W Bush.
So that friend seems to be hiding his real reason for voting for trump. I mean who dismisses a 120% increase?
Chemisse
(30,817 posts)He apparently felt Trump, the "businessman" was a better bet.
I expect there were other reasons, since he was (is) a life-long Republican. Neither of us was interested in discussing it at length, once we had established that we were on opposing sides of the political spectrum.

(9,670 posts)Yes, I've met vengeful, unhappy and bitter shells of persons here in rural Georgia. They were that way before Trump ever came up. I also know a whole lot of generational Republicans, people whose parents and grandparents and great-grandparents were all Republicans, and why should they ever bust out of that mold? I've met brainwashed Republicans, people who can't turn off FOX or Rush but think they understand how the world of politics operate. I've met stupid Republicans, bigoted Republicans, evangelical nutjobs that align themselves with Republicans just because, you know, baby-killers and all that.
I've met a life-long Democrat who became disillusioned and now parrots Trump and lays wreaths at his feet. She's my mother-in-law. FOX got her ass.
A lot of these folks live normal lives, superficially. Their kids go to school with our kids, we bump into each other at the grocery store. They work in our offices and shop in our shops. Keep them off politics and you may never know you're with one of them.
That's my experience.

Insular: Tend to stick with their own type - socio-economic, race (white mostly), religion (the ones I know are mostly Christian). Not particularly well traveled, live in suburbs or in rural areas. Usually xenophobic and outright racist. Most are just ignorant as they have not met any actual minorities.
Greedy: Bitch about taxes - if there is a "single issue" among Trump voters, it's taxes.
Gullible: Believe Trump's lies, believe the GOP cares about people like them, despite evidence to the contrary.

(6,262 posts)Neighbors whom I adore and would do anything for me are all about "business." Their education is narrow, but they are not, when it comes to personal relationships.
Go figure.
However, they confided to me how disappointed they are with the Dump, but I knew better than to ask if they now would vote for Hillary. I knew the answer would be "NO!" The past election was triumph of hate over fear IMO. The Hillary Hatred, nurtured for over 30 years on Fox, Drudge, and other places proved to be so toxic that even these relative moderate Repugs felt they had to do anything rather than have her win. They will NEVER get over that. Propaganda works over time.
They watch Pox, no matter how I try to kindly dissuade them. They do turn it off when I visit, without my asking.
Right now, accepting them as they are and appreciating their love, knowing that they know and respect me despite my politics. I do not seek such a discussion, nor do they, but sometimes current events impinge on our chats. We both cut it off, valuing our love over all else.
One of their grown kids is very progressive, judging from his FB feed. The other is still a bit cryptic.
They are the white, suburban, smaller business owners who loved Romney, but I think are "ready" to switch if our candidate hits the right notes on the economy. (Romney is their ideal.) They hated ACA due to how it impacted their business.
Summing up - very nice people who just might be persuaded. If Dump runs again, they will either switch in the Presidential or sit it out IMO.
highplainsdem
(49,044 posts)that he was the Republican nominee. Actually, that's an understatement. They were very unhappy that he was the nominee. None of them had any respect for Hillary Clinton, though, and I heard bitter complaints about the choice they had to make. They voted for Trump because they felt he would be much closer to them on issues they cared about, including abortion.
None of them were NeverTrumpers. IMO they didn't have the political acumen to understand just how much of a threat he was to their party as well as ours, and to the country and entire world.
I don't agree with their politics. But in my experience they're good people, generous and well-intentioned for the most part, but not as open-minded as liberals, and more inclined to look backward than to accept change and look far enough ahead to be aware of threats liberals can see, whether it's the threat Trump poses or the threat from global warming.
I'm not saying there aren't any Trump voters who are vengeful, unhappy and bitter shells. Judging by the crowds at his rallies, it's obvious that a lot of the people who idolize Trump could be described that way.
But I think you should differentiate between the Trump fans (the deplorables) and the people who voted for him who did not want him as the nominee, but decided to vote for him anyway because they didn't want to stay home and wouldn't switch parties to vote against him.
Calista241
(5,586 posts)You do realize that we will need some of them to vote for our candidates if we want to, you know, win elections and shit. At least some of those Trump voters voted for Obama. And it's not even the Presidential elections where we need them. We need them is all districts out there. The President can't do shit without the House and Senate, as Republicans adeptly proved to us in the last part of Obama's Presidency.
If you think Alabama was a sign of things to come, you're sorely mistaken. The Republicans will not put up a shitty candidate like Roy Moore any more this coming cycle. It would almost have been better if Moore won, as we could have tarnished their entire party with that man come 2018.
How about we try to convince them we are right, instead of being elitist liberal assholes.
NNadir
(33,563 posts)I'm sorry but you must be a racist to have voted for this awful excuse for a human being.
Racism is not now, nor ever has been, a view held by an extreme minority in this country, or for that matter, in most other countries.
It's a powerful and widely held worldview, which is why it needs to be confronted for what it is.
The electoral college is what put this mindless racist asshole in the White House, where he has permanently stained the office for all time. The electoral college itself is a part of the constitution that was put there in order to protect slavery.
Roy Moore wasn't joking when he wished to eliminate all amendments after the 10th, including the 13th and the 14th.
Now there are many racists who aren't open about being racists because racism has been driven underground by cultural approbation. But that cultural approbation is under attack, which is why we have nazis marching in American streets.
Sorry, if you voted for Trump - a lifelong racist and white supremacist - you are a racist, clear and simple.
I don't care if they like being called what they are. Being opposed to racism is not a feature of being "liberal elitist asshole."
Defending racists is a feature of being an apologist for racism. If there's anything defining about what is and is not an asshole, defending racists would be it.
The Trump voters are what they are and no amount of lipstick on pigs will make them into movie stars.

(6,150 posts)There were two people in my office who voted for him. Decent people - although one thought Obama was a racist. There was a man at my family reunion who voted for him. Card carrying Republican (black).
Some people wanted "anyone but Hillary". I don't know why, I don't know why people hated her so much, but those weren't "vengeful, unhappy, bitter" people. As far as they were concerned, Trump was the better of two bad choices.
I have found that when you work with Republicans and have to have strong, positive, cooperative relationships with Republicans, you have to leave the Trump-bashing at home.
Awsi Dooger
(14,565 posts)That covers 90% of the Trump supporters I know.
Nowadays when I see a white person aged 40+ I assume he/she watches Fox and supports Republicans. It is an increasingly reliable stereotype.
