Or, is it just the way things are? I know, it's a tiny nit to pick within your point. But, i don't have to believe in gravity. It just exists.

There are people who believe the earth is flat, but it's spherical anyhow. If I decide I don't believe in gravity, I will nevertheless fall and bust my ass if I jump off my roof. Belief is irrelevant to science.

But the vast majority know it is more profitable for their donors to delay action as long as possible. The lies are cynical - they know they're lying.

They're making a calculated choice: maximize profits now, push off the costs into the hazy future when they will be socialized by future generations.

If you're an Oil and Gas executive/shareholder in your 60s, you'd need empathy to care about the world 40 years from now. You don't get to be an Oil and Gas executive/shareholder in your 60s by being empathetic.

They're paid to misinform. They're consultants running a PR campaign for Oil & Gas Corporations.

Trump? He's blurred the line between Dumbass and Troll.

ideologically driven to deny science. It is part of who they are. And it doesn't take too much effort from industry to convince them.

Those are the fundamentalists. Facts are threats to their belief system, and it makes them easy to exploit.
