Sometimes we need to be reminded beauty exists in the world TODAY.

(26,602 posts)I remember walking into a Chihuly exhibit years ago - can't remember where, maybe LA - and it just stopped me in my tracks. Just overwhelming color and structure...

(5,128 posts)Even the tram driver said it was his favorite. It was mine and my mother's.
At the time, I commented "I should think the ladies of Highland Park haven't seen a bauble that size ever."

(26,602 posts)bottom (white), but I think I like the bottom one better. It's such a complete installation with the fish and the lilypads, and even though the glass is simpler I love the way it varies in appearance depending on view angle...

(3,069 posts)Everyone who I know who has been absolutely loved it. I can't manage it right now, but the good news for everyone is that it will be there for a few months, well into fall. Thanks for posting!

(5,128 posts)It was soooo hot Saturday (106) that we realized later how lucky we were to be out of there by 11:30!
We will be back in the Fall! Ten years in the making and a totally different show at night.
Saturday was HOT, glad you got there early. I am going to go as soon as I can. The garden is beautiful and the art makes it even more so. The photos I have seen from friends who went at night are amazing, and yes, totally different feeling from the daylight.

(26,582 posts)I believe only one was damaged, and there was softball sized hail.

(5,128 posts)Didn't get a death toll, but I was told by a Chihuly Team volunteer that the original team showed up to restore the scene with spares that had been shipped with the original load. Each glass item was individually wrapped and shipped in its own crate. Must have been tens of thousands.
For the record the recent hail storm only affected those plates, shaped conveniently like targets.

(63,912 posts)It is also by the artist, who donated it after a major exhibit of his works about a year ago. It's enormous and sits in a great hall right next to the restaurant tables so that you can look at it while you have lunch. I am at the MFA about 6 times a year with my daughter and we love it each time we go.

(5,018 posts)The Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix kept a few pieces only because they had a fund raising drive to raise the money to purchase and maintain them. I know the artist donates the pieces for the exhibit itself (the museum pays the installation costs - which can be substantial) but I'm pretty sure he didn't donate any after the show. Maybe he's feeling more generous now (3.5 years later).

(63,912 posts)I seem to recall some fundraising that went on but for some reason I think he had a part in it. I do not recall seeing a wall plate listing it as a "gift of..."
sorry if I got led astray there...
At any rate, the MFA is a great venue for any serious artist.
on edit: this was made possible by two large donors, one being Liv Ullman, and lots of individual donations, a lot of it done at the door for patrons to contribute. My bad. It was installed and they wanted to keep it permanently.
Sorry I got you going! Its acquisition wasn't so long ago either...my memory stinks...

(5,018 posts)and think that this is a significant source of income for him - he donates the pieces to the show and they end up buying a piece. Of course, I did donate to help keep it and love that we still have those pieces at the garden so it ends up being a win/win all around

(94,585 posts)...but I'm seeing Chihuly everywhere (there was a whole lobby placement in my DC hotel), and it all seems to be the same forms. Don't get me wrong, I really like his work (we have one of his pieces in our living room), but I think he's taking the easy way out by revisting the same designs over and over.

(41,984 posts)It really does take a village, and a massive amount of work to make, transport, and assemble his work. I've had the privelege of having gotten a little insight from participants and it's just wonderful to know we work so hard to make something beautiful.
Thank you for the photos!

(5,018 posts)was originally designed for the Phoenix exhibit. And the 4th picture was said to be "special to the Phoenix exhibit" - I guess not so much anymore - supposedly inspired by the agaves they were exhibited with. I donated to the fund at the botanical garden to purchase the ones in Phoenix for the permanent exhibit. For a while the show seemed to be following me around. It was a the Phipps in Pittsburgh in 2007 when I was there, it was in San Francisco in 2008 when I was there (I didn't go to that show), and it was in Phoenix in 2008. Here are some of my pictures:
