Worried Mom Calls Police on Missing Son and Finds Out He Was Planning Christmas Surprise
A single mother who spent her savings to move her family into a new apartment was overcome with worry when her son kept disappearingbut unbeknownst to her, her loving children were planning a Christmas surprise.Sophia Reed recently moved to Oklahoma City after her husband suddenly left her. The move used up most of her savings thanks to the security deposit and rent, and Reed planned to share a nice Christmas dinner with her four children in lieu of buying presents she couldnt afford. We was expecting a nice dinner for Christmas and just be together and just show love to each other, Reed told CBS 11.
But as the family settled into their new home and surroundings, Reed became increasingly concerned as her 13-year-old son, Darius, kept disappearing for hours on end. So the worried mother turned to the police while Darius was on one of his mysterious excursions in mid-December, and thats when it was revealed what her son and his siblings were up to. I was afraid he was going to get in trouble, Reeds daughter, Deneisha, told Oklahoma 4 News. I just didnt want to say anything because it would blow the whole thing.
Darius told Officer Roland Russell of the Oklahoma City Police Departmentwho responded to Reeds callthat he was collecting hundreds of cans to raise money and bring some Christmas cheer to his mother. At that point, the young boy had collected $13. On my way out to my car, I go down the stairs and I see him sitting there, Russell told KOCO News. It was, like probably, 30 degrees outside, and he had a little T-shirt on.
After learning what he was up to, Russell decided to keep Darius secret, and went back to his station to spread the word with the intention of helping the 13-year-old on his mission. With Russells support, the department was able to raise about $800 to buy gifts for Reed and her children, just in time for Christmas. I started getting messages from all kinds of people, Russell said. I didnt think I was going to and it ended up turning into a pretty big deal.
. . . .
As for Darius, he said there was no question why he would go out for those long hours in search of dozens of cans. I just wanted to do something for my mama, he told Oklahoma 4 News.

(63,225 posts)The remarkable sweetness of these stories invariably hides their underlying tragedy.
What kind of a fucking 1st world nation do we live in when a child has to collect garbage in freezing temperatures in order to buy his mom a present?
This is a horror, and Darius' clear love for his mother shows that we need to do much better.

One thing I learned from John Oliver is that our system intentionally does not give people at the bottom a chance to succeed. And it keeps them drowning in debt with no way of ever paying it off, whether it's student loans, or sub prime auto loans, or for profit colleges, or bail bonds, or televangelists, these things are intentionally designed to feed off the bottom. And it's scary. If our system is that broken by corrupt companies and even more corrupt individuals, we need to work fixing it, otherwise it's going to get worse.

(4,311 posts)By the way, I once read a story about a family caught in this situation. They found a few magazines somewhere, so they secretly cut out pictures of things they would LIKE to give each other: a yacht, a diamond necklace, a horse, a mansion. They wrapped them up in tissue paper with some kind of improvised bows, and put them under the tree. On Christmas morning, they unwrapped each other's good wishes and had a wonderful time sharing love and laughter and hope. They made Christmas happen, anyway. I am just putting this out there, as it may save Christmas for some family, in the difficult days ahead.
That said, this young man deserves applause, for his efforts and for his success, in giving his family a wonderful Christmas in spite of everything.
