(343 posts)Because we all share this planet earth, we have to learn to live in harmony and peace with each other and with nature. This is not just a dream, but a necessity.
Wars arise from a failure to understand one another's humanness. Instead of summit meetings, why not have families meet for a picnic and get to know each other while the children play together?

it does not mean to be in a place
where there is no noise, trouble or hard work ...
it means to be in the midst of those things and still

(2,208 posts)...hanging on the wall, right by the front door.
As a child, I had no choice but to see it a zillion times every day.
It probably had as much of an effect on my attitude as anything the parents actually said in verbal words.
Ironically, as I was typing this, the Jimmy Cliff song "Vietnam" came up in the iTunes shuffle...
Peace everyone!!!

(37,573 posts)Not raging, just asking.
The thing is you cannot poke people in the eye or spit in their face and then later say "peace". And if there is a mutual exchange of pokes and spit, there probably should be a mutual exchange of apologies before there can be peace. There has to be mutual resolve to do better in the future, and mutual respect for opposing sides.
Otherwise you are just taking a break between rounds.
I think there is a fundamental intolerance that undermines peace. An intolerance for certain ideas, and then an intolerance for the people who hold those ideas. Which is not to say that there are not bad ideas or wrong ideas, but it should be possible to discuss the ideas without sliding into a discussion about the people who hold those ideas.
Now, I am not saying I have never crossed the line, particularly after my face was spat upon, but I think if people would resolve to discuss ideas, that even if they failed from time to time (and could then be reminded of their resolution) that we would have more peace.
