Is a mens rights activist sabatoging Last Jedi review scores?

It’s the enduring mystery of “Star Wars: The Last Jedi”: Do viewers actually hate it, or are its terrible online audience ratings — 54 percent and falling on Rotten Tomatoes — the work of hidden (sorry) forces?

There will be no more Jedi puns in this article. But there will be spoilers, and a journey to a tiny Facebook page whose leader rose to fame by claiming, somewhat incredibly, that he deployed a bot army to ruin the film’s scores in the name of male rights.

With very few exceptions, critics liked “The Last Jedi.”

It earned three out of four stars from The Washinton Post’s Ann Hornaday for its moments of humor and gravity — even if it did go on a bit long. More than nine in 10 critics approved of the film by Rotten Tomatoes’s count. And Metacritic’s average score was just a few points lower.

But so much for professional opinions.

Metacritic’s humble users gave the film a failing 4.8 out of 10. (“A repugnant film that shows absolutely zero respect for its legacy,” reads a typical nil-score review on the site.) And the popcorn class on Rotten Tomatoes splatted the movie with a 54 percent fresh rating, which The Post noted made for the site’s widest audience-critic gulf in the history of “Star Wars” films.

Deepening the mystery, The Post’s Michael Cavna wrote, real-life viewers polled at movie theaters overwhelmingly liked the film. And its ticket sales have been outstanding.

So some suspect that something strange is afoot with the online scores.

As the awesome Joe Bob Briggs used to say on Drive-In Theater, there's no plot to get in the way of the story.

Every Star Wars icon is in there but the kitchen sink. Will have to get the video to scan for evidence of a kitchen sink.

I cried every time Carrie Fisher was onscreen. I understand her beloved dog Gary Fisher is in the casino scene. Another reason to buy the video.

Anyway, don't believe the naysayers. It's all Obama's fault. (I keed - I keed)

If you or someone else like it, good for them. To each their own.

For me, I couldn't get past all the plot holes and story writing. I know that all SW movies have plot holes, but this one had too many for me to enjoy the movie. Also I didn't like the story itself. It was just not a movie I liked, but will never bash anyone else for liking it.

The Luke-Rey-Kylo-Snoke storyline was decent, especially towards the end of the movie. The other part of the plot was mediocre and full of holes. But the visuals were great, so it wasn't a total bust.

I didn't like the storyline at all especially with the character of Luke and Snoke. I don't want to spoil anything, but they waste their potential characters. There are so many ways to make their characters better. After thinking longer about this movie, I hate it even more than I walked out of the theater.

saw it Saturday. thought it was better than "Force Awakens" and not as good as "Rogue One", it's a Star Wars movie not the frickin "Godfather" okay? if you go expecting a popcorn action flick, you'll come away satisfied. if you go expecting Satori from Yoda & co. you'll probably be disappointed. expectations will make or break this movie for you, but if you've seen all the others you're bound to have some so good luck. fwiw, the little kids in the theatre seemed to enjoy it. 6/10 for me.

I just got home from seeing it.

It's just by reading this thread that I realized that maybe it may be a bit to "liberal" for some people. Aren't we used to female heroes by now? I can see how those "mens rights" groups may hate it, they tend to be bigoted in many ways. Seeing a movie where the girl hero ends up hugging the black guy must make their blood boil.

I saw this movie as a set up for future movies.

The people who hold the original trilogy in high esteem aren't the target audience any longer. Maybe not even since Empire Strikes back. After that, it was more and more marketed to kids. But that original group, especially with the vast amount of non-movie stories, has developed a deep attachment that not much could measure up to. The Force Awakens was more or less a slightly different take episode 4, so it gets a pass. But this movie, particularly with the take on Luke Skywalker, is setting up for where Disney wants to take the movies going forward. Of course it's going to upset the hardcore fans because it's different.

I saw the original Star Wars the day it came out. Since I'm pretty much of a Science Fiction fan, I was stoked to see it. Believe it or not I was disappointed because I was hoping that it would be hard core sci-fi, but alas, to me it was merely a fairy tale set in space.

My husband loved it!
It kind of grew on me.

Yes it was a little weird for a Star Wars movie, but it was still great, and I understood the story. I just think some people had so many preconceived ideas what Luke Skywalker was supposed to be like from the old Legends cannon and when he didn't live up to that people just trashed the whole movie

I personally hated it and it goes beyond Luke story arc. Some people are not just going to like the same media as the next person. For example, I know a few friends that love Suicide Squad. I think that movie was horrible all the way through, but to each their own.

You could have taken Luke out of this movie and I still would not like this movie. There are so many plot holes and plot contrivance in it for my taste.

The sheer hatred that was exposed when it was revealed there was a black stormtrooper

And then all the rage over how Rey could do what she did without any training, which is pretty much exactly like Luke in the original.

There is a very vocal minority that is louder than the rest and soaking up the space regarding it, which influences others and can set some serious pre-judgment about it.

I don't see any mystery...it was OK, but not the best of the Star Wars movies.

It had too many "remake" scenes from previous movies, a confused plot, and retrenched battles. The basic Star Wars themes were there, and most effects were good.

If you weren't up on the genealogy of Star Wars characters, you'd likely be a bit lost. There was too much running around on an island, not enough of a love story, and some weird subplots.
