The saxophone solo ending never fails to give chills. Maybe even a tear or two...
He died way too young. Loved all of his music. RIP Dan

At Woodruff High School, Jill Anderson had a typical teen romance: on-again/off-again with the same boy over several years.
Hed write a lot of poetry and share his insights with Jill. But as they went to separate colleges, things cooled off. They tried to stay in touch, but he moved out West and she headed to Chicago.
And that mightve been the sum of a sweet memory, if not for a chance reunion one Christmas Eve at a Peoria convenience story - one music fans know well.
Jills old boyfriend was Dan Fogelberg, who memorialized their convenience-store encounter in Same Old Lang Syne. Since the songs release in 1980, Peoria - as well as the rest of his fans worldwide - has wondered about the old lover referenced in the song. Fogelberg never would say, and only a handful of people knew the ex-girlfriends identify.

(3,208 posts)He was such a poet and had such talent for putting his words with just the right tune.
I was lucky to see him in St. Louis in the 80s (83?84? it was the year the Cardinals played the Brewers in the World Series because those teams, Fogelberg and me and my then boyfriend-now-husband and my mother all went to Wisconsin the following week [not together obviously, it was just a coincidence]).
After 30+ years of many drives to Madison from St. Louis, I even appreciated how he can sing so beautifully about Illinois!

(7,768 posts)He said if he was only able to write ONE song in his entire life, it would be 'Leader Of The Band'.
His tribute to his father.
And Papa I don't think I said, "I love you" near enough.
He wrote 'Run For The Roses' when he had a horse ranch in Colorado . The song was to express his love for horses.

(16,334 posts)I guess it's not played too often and it captures me every time. Maybe we all relate to an old flame or something? Or maybe it's just that we can picture the story as it's being sung.

(7,768 posts)And no matter how many times I've listened to it, I still get the predictable tightness in my throat.
As he's singing, I'm thinking "NO, don't get out of her car. Don't leave. Kiss her again. She still loves you and you love her!" That's the ending I want to happen. lol. But he was married at the time so...
So bittersweet.

(3,469 posts)I was at a concert of his when he sang that song. It hadn't been released yet and he said we were the first to hear it. Loved him so much. Rest In Peace, Dan.
