BY JOSH DELK - 12/23/17 10:27 AM EST
Rev. Franklin Graham said Saturday that it's "refreshing" that President Trump doesn't care "what the liberals think" of his pledge to destigmatize people wishing "merry Christmas."
"I'm so excited that the president isn't afraid to mention the name of Jesus Christ and that he boldly stands for not only Christ but all religious freedom, and it's refreshing to have a president who's just not afraid and doesn't care what all the liberals think," Graham said on Fox News channel's "Fox & Friends."
Graham, the son of the evangelist Billy Graham and president of Samaritan's Purse, praised the president for following through on his promise that "people will be saying merry Christmas again" upon taking office.
Trump claims the practice of saying "happy holidays" in lieu of mentioning the Christian holiday is a product of "political correctness."

(34,195 posts)I thought his father, Billy Graham, would be disgusted by his son Franklin's beliefs and comments,
but then recall Billy Graham was heard making anti Semitic comments to President Nixon.

(2,074 posts)they make me want to NOT say "Merry Christmas" anymore. I used to say it merrily to fellow Christians, alongside Happy Holidays to everyone I knew not to be Christian. If I accidentally said Merry Christmas to someone who did not in fact celebrate Christmas, we would laugh it off and go our merry ways, and if someone said Happy Holidays to me, I would smile and wish them the same, in the spirit of the season. Now these right-wing Christians have made any mention of Christmas toxic. They make me sick.

(2,404 posts)I've never felt that I couldn't say Merry Christmas or talk about Jesus if I wanted to. This whole "war on Christmas" bs is a made up right-wing attack line.
Honestly, I have not been in the mood to say Merry Christmas this year to anyone because I don't want people to think I am saying it because Orangefuhrer has ordered it. He really does poison everything.
I'm taking a short politics break. I need it. I am planning to have a Merry Christmas with my family, and wish everyone Happy Holidays with whatever brings you joy this time of year.
Peace to all.

(14,861 posts)Every single time one of these lying Christians says something to me about how they haven't been "allowed" to say Merry Christmas, I ask, "Has anyone been arrested for saying that? Have any churches been shut down for putting it on their signs? Has there been a law passed anywhere in the US prohibiting it?"
They would also have you believe that one ever said Holiday until recently. Wrong. I've been reading some newspapers from December 1895 recently. Guess what I found? Ads for Holiday sales, stories about Holiday parties, announcements of Holiday events, editorials about the Holiday season, etc. etc. etc. I was actually surprised at how little the word Christmas was used.

Love thy neighbor, what you do to the least of them you do to me, turn the other cheek, etc. only applies to fellow right-wing filth, I guess.

(12,448 posts)Chrishna, of India, born on December 25, 3228 BC, his mother was a virgin, mothers name was Maia.
Mithra, of Persia, born on December 25, before 1500 BC, his birth was witnessed by Shepherds that brought gifts to honor him.
Horus, of Egypt, born on December 25, before 2500 BC.
Buddha, of India, born on December 25, 563 BC, his mothers name was Maya (similar to Mary) she was a virgin. He was immaculately conceived, and at birth, he announced that he was a savior to the world. His birth was announced by a star. At his birth, he was visited by Wise Men.
There were many gods who were born of virgins, were sons of gods. The crucifixion story happened in many gods' "lives." Jesus (or the Church) appropriated many of Buddha's ideas.
Not to mention, there are two Nativity stories in the Bible (Matthew and Luke) that contradict each other in important details. Mark doesn't mention the birth at all, and John's gospel is always a weird outlier. He treats Jesus' birth in otherworldly terms; nothing so pedestrian as the manger scene.
As for Franklin Graham: Fuck him.

(10,064 posts)The same people Franklin Graham panders to. Their wealth, power, and status depend on targeting their message to people that WILL care.
A majority of critical thinking intelligent Christians and non-Christians know Trump cares only about himself and nothing about Christmas/religion. Franklin Graham knows this as well, but saying so is not good for his business. They (Graham and Trump) both worship the god of money and personal prosperity.

(15,805 posts)govern half the country that is loyal to him. Looking at Trump's low polling numbers, it's clear that the public recognizes this narrow mindedness as a serious flaw in a leader. Graham is a religious fanatic, the poster child that demonstrates why it is vital to keep religion separate from politics.
On a side note; charlatans, like this Billy Graham con man, who loudly define their deeply held religious beliefs with specious, shallow and inconsequential slogans, are driving away the very people they depend for their continued wealth and power. Good job!
