It's awful for everyone involved any time but over the holidays must be even worse than that.

It just nudged past the Cedar fire today.

http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-thomas-fire-size-20171222-20171222-htmlstory.html:

As of Friday morning, the blaze was 65% contained after burning 272,800 acres, eclipsed only by the 2003 Cedar fire in San Diego County, which burned 273,246 acres.

http://www.fire.ca.gov/current_incidents/incidentdetails/Index/1922:

Acres Burned - Containment: 273,400 acres - 65% contained

It is dry and crispy down here...less than 1/4 inch of rain in 6 months.

15. The Santiago Canyon Fire of 1889 was larger

Just north of 300,000 acres. Same drought and Santa Ana wind conditions. There is no doubt the Thomas fire would have been bigger if we didn't shove a ton of resources into fighting it.

8. Rain can be a mixed blessing sometimes.

We had a wet winter and spring, which led to lots of growth, which then dried in the summer and fall and turned into a shit-ton of fuel.

And now burned hillsides will turn into mudslides if the rain comes heavy. Sometimes ya can’t win.

11. We didn't have the fires to guarantee the mudslides

but we had so much rain that there were mudslides. They weren't as horrific as they might have been.
Fire and water are essentials but both facilitate life and destroy it.

9. The Central Coast region will be traumatized for a long time, as will Santa Rosa to the north...

We got to talk to some neighbors today over coffee and learned a lot-- for instance, we really need to have our attic inspected, because the insulation is full of soot, and in the case of one person they found a dead ember that had blown in thru the vents up there and fortunately went out. So, will file a claim after all because replacing all that insulation will be costly. I learned I should file a claim regarding the damage to the oak tree, and have its health evaluated by an arborist. It has quite a large burn scar on the trunk facing the house -- and as I told the lady in the insurance office, a 150 to 200 year old California oak is a substantial asset to the property (just in case she missed that). I do understand we are far down the list of people who will get a visit from their agent, but in a sense I want our phone call to be date-stamped before January 1.

Then there was the plumber we met on the way out from our neighbor: he lost absolutely everything including his cat. Goddam.

Natural oil seeps are still smoldering, apparently. Beautiful little Ojai, a bowl in the mountains, seems to be hard hit. The smoldering oil is toxic.

Thank you to all here who have shown your caring and support.

13. Most of my friends live in Ventura.

One of them does a great deal of volunteer work at the Unitarian Univeralist church there, and he’s been telling me that the level of devastation has been almost impossible to wrap his mind around.

And with the National Guard armory being used for staging firefighting equipment they’ve been unable to use it for emergency cold-weather shelter for he homeless. One problem just piles onto the next for you guys.

My SIL has insisted I meet a friend of hers who is very active in both the UU church and the Jewish temple -- a very bright and forceful woman working on homeless issues, food bank, etc. Needless to say, she was also busy on fire-evacuee issues. She scooped me up one day from my SIL's while I was there and it was exhausting following her around. LOL. I just have not yet made it over to the UUs in person, but will.

I signed up for the rapid response protest, though.

Looks like I have landed in a very simpatico community.
