The debt to GDP is the best measure of how things are going. Reagan grew this number by 6.1%/yr., Bush I by 6.0%/yr., Clinton reduced by 1.6%/yr., Bush II increased by 4.4%/yr., and Obama increased by 3.8%/yr.

God knows what Trump will end of doing. For the first year he has benefited from Obama's policies. Obama's debt to GDP ratio was pretty constant through his second term - a far cry from his Republican predecessors.
