How can fans of "Atlas Shrugged" also support the police, military, firefighters, etc?

If the whole point of the book is that altruism is evil and that putting yourself first is the highest moral accomplishment you can make, then how do they reconcile that belief with support for so many brave men and women who put their lives on the line every day to make a better society for the rest of us? For that matter, how can they reconcile their belief in Jesus, who died for the sins of all mankind, with Rand's worldview?

I got into this discussion at work last night, and it re-affirms my belief to stay out of political discussions at work as much as possible.
