One of the reasons "60 Minutes" is no longer credible.
On Sunday's broadcast, they had a segment on an old civil rights case, a murder.

The former sheriff is thought to be a suspect.

BUT...

The reporter makes a total ass of himself here:

"Well, you know, sheriff, you could clear this up with a lie detector test," Kroft pointed out.

A polygraph is *NOT* a "lie detector."

It's a nervousness detector.

And they have the accuracy rate of Tarot cards.

1. The very name is a lie. It's only 48 minutes without commercials.

7. Even less than that.
Some of their "content" is nothing less than a commercial.

2. I don't think Kroft said that in an attempt to "clear this up",
as much as to try to keep the guy talking and get something - anything (hopefully revealing) from the man. The Sheriff had already said it was the last question before Kroft asked this one.

The Sheriff's reply was something like, "Well, it won't get cleared up then" (or something to that effect).

I'm not disagreeing with you about the credibility of 60 Minutes. It's doesn't have the standing it once had, but it's still better than a lot of other shows.

3. "60 Minutes" has not been credible to me since
1981. My community was smeared by the show back then. I have wondered about their accuracy since that time, because I know what they said about us was not true.

4. It is also not admissible in a court of law as evidence.

5. I would never, ever take a lie-detector test
...and I'm about as honest as it gets. I had a friend jailed on false charges because he failed their lie-detector test. He had never been arrested before. He remained in jail for 6 months until the person who committed the crime (robbery) admitted to the offense after being caught commiting another crime.

Sometimes being in the wrong place at the wrong time happens.

He was stopping at a convenience to get something. HE walked in, no one was at the counter because the clerk had been bound and stuffed in the back room by the robber, who had already left the store. So, my friend returned to his car and left, squealing his tires as he left. It was at this time the clerk had gotten free of his bindings and ran to the door in time to see my friend leaving the lot, and he got his tag number. HE was stopped a couple of minutes later and jailed.

The robber wore a ski mask, so the clerk could not identify him. He also did not see the robbers car (because he left on foot)
When my friend was stopped, they did not find the clothes the clerk described the robber wearing or the money (this was less than five minutes after the robbery).

Circumstantial evidence (his being seen leaving the lot) kept him in jail for six months after he failed the test!

Thank god justice prevailed.
