Amid four GE reactor meltdowns in Japan, Obama pushes for more nukes
"During a March 30 energy speech, Obama reaffirmed a commitment not only to the currently operating nuclear fleet but also to new reactor construction.

More disconcerting is that the federal agency mandated to carry out that “comprehensive review,” the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, has a long track record of ceding to the financial demands of industry when enforcement of its own safety rules are challenged. Thus, on multiple occasions, the NRC has tolerated industry stonewalling of safety fixes, knowingly allowing reactors to continue operating in a dangerous condition and in violation of U.S. federal law such as fire code.

This kind of gambling with the lives of the American public to stretch nuclear production margins continues unfettered. While the NRC is answerable to Congress, that body has never challenged its effectiveness. That has been left to activists and watchdog groups. The NRC’s loyalty to the profit-margins of the nuclear industry can in part be explained by the fact that 90% of the agency’s funding comes from fees it levies from the reactor owners.

Therefore, despite assurances from the nuclear industry, the NRC, the White House and Congress that Americans have nothing to fear from a Fukushima-style disaster in the U.S., the reality is rather different."

1. He's big on coal and natural gas too.
He's a regressive, and he's not very educated on energy issues. He thinks coal is clean, for example.

3. Someone should send him a copy of "Gasland."
Good G-d. NO ONE in their right mind would support Natural Gas after seeing that movie. :( He must be getting HUGE $$$$$ from each and every one of those corporations. I KNOW the nuke industry pays him VERY, VERY well.

15. I've seen excerpts online, but haven't watched it yet.
I don't expect any big surprises, as I'm pretty well informed on the subject, but I do want to see the whole documentary, then pass it along.

10. Proof that he's a damned fool. That's what.
He's totally out of touch with what anyone sane person thinks. But he's totally in the pocket of corporations, and he's entirely willing to parrot absolutely anything the energy companies want him to say.

:grr:

4. He's acting as a corporate spokesperson.
I don't believe that should be the role of the President of the United States.

9. Citizens stopped the construction of the proposed Black Fox complex in Oklahoma
but in Missouri, they voted 60-40 to approve the Callaway nuclear complex just a year and a half after Three Mile Island
