Authorities issued a tsunami advisory Monday morning for coastal areas of Miyagi Prefecture in northeastern Japan after a 6.5-magnitude quake struck the region, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
The agency said the tsunami height was expected to be about 0.5 meters, or 1.6 feet, tall. Japanese broadcaster NHK reported that the tsunami was believed to have passed. Video of the coastal area in the tsunami zone broadcast by NHK showed slight ripples to the water, which "could be indicative of rises" in water levels, CNN meteorologist Jacqui Jeras said.
The Monday temblor was located near the site of the 9.0-magnitude March 11 earthquake that triggered a massive tsunami, killing thousands and spawning a nuclear emergency at a severely damaged power plant in Fukushima Prefecture.
The 7:24 a.m. earthquake struck Monday about 70 miles east of Sendai at a depth of 3.7 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
A Pacific-wide destructive tsunami is not expected, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.

21. Our fight or flight triggers are sky high nowadays.
The real time videos of the tsunami were the scariest thing I ever saw because I knew people were really dying in front of my eyes. I've been thinking about how I would need to vacate the premises if we had a big one here. I honestly think I would have to run.

Survivors will be in Inwood, the upper part. Our buildings are tall but they aren't built to sway or meet Japanese standards.

19. After the 400th aftershock, it does get a bit repetitive
I'm not saying it doesn't suck, it does, but when a place has been hammered like Japan has, it just isn't going to be a breaking story. It's already broken, probably beyond repair.

29. Just now? It's not going to be that quick.
But Japan is about to enter a food crisis. They've poisoned their agricultural capability for a tidy portion of their island, maybe more. I wouldn't eat any fish they can catch, would you? If the water table is poisoned, they can't farm the fish, either.

Think food is expensive now? And Social Security is busy screwing up any possibility of a COLA for the coming year. And Congress wants to cut food stamps. The right wing hasn't figured out that the only thing keeping them alive are those food stamps. They don't make cause and effect connections.

23. Uh... There have been a lot of shocks in that range

It was reported on CNN within moments of the USGS page alert (you can subscribe to electronic alerts), and repeated several times. I doubt many in the affected area are watching CNN US version, so it's not as if there is any reason for flashing lights on US news for every aftershock.
