The Republican Party Presents: The All American Yard Sale
An essay for your reading pleasure:

America has always been a beacon of light to so many people around the world. Our forefathers set an example of Democracy, open voting and every person had the right to follow the American Dream.

And our hardworking forefathers worked their tails off to make sure that America had the very best to offer. Our forefathers, for hundreds of years, toiled and strained and paid taxes and donated money to make sure that America would stay that golden beacon of light for the whole world.

But the Republican Party has taken this (self-made) financial crisis as an opportunity to rape and plunder the legacy that belongs to every American. I am sorry if the word rape, used in this instance causes offense but, I honestly cannot think of another word that expresses the violation of the human spirit that the Republicans are bringing down upon the country. These corporate bought politicians are setting up a liquidation sale not only of our assets but the sale of our heritage and our history.

A county hospital is not an asset to be sold to friends in the medical business. A county hospital was an act by your forefathers to put in place a hospital to care not only for themselves but for their children and their children's children. This is not a venture for profit but a huge investment by our grandparents to care for the people. It is our inheritance. They could have saved that money or spent in on something else but they worked hard and went without so that America would be a stronger country. What right does a Florida Governor who has been in office for a couple of months, have to strip every person in Florida of the inheritance left to them by their grandparents?

Every generation of American worked hard and payed extra taxes to help pay for better and better public school systems. They addressed the needs of the mind with libraries in every school, with programs to teach the really smart kids and even better programs to help the ones who needed extra help. Our grandparents saw the need for physical fitness as part of the curriculum and bought bonds to put up stadiums and soccer fields, baseball diamonds and basketball courts, swimming pools and gymnasiums. They invested in science labs and home ec rooms and they created the best education system the world has ever seen. And the Republican think their charter schools and private schools are better so they have begun the dismantling of the education system that our forefathers worked so hard to create. The Republicans, again, are stripping us of legacy and heritage, our inheritance. What right have they to strangle the school system financially with cut after cut? Bleeding them until the schools must themselves kill off the programs that so many Americans worked on so generations of Americans to follow would benefit by their sacrifice. Who are these people who think they have the right to sell the properties that they had no part in purchasing? Who are these people who think their 2 or 3 months of experience gives them the right to dismantle 300+ years of effort by the people to leave in place the glorious thing that is our education system.

We need to start standing up for ourselves and our legacy. I keep seeing posts and articles about how the next generation is going to have less income and a lower standard of living than the generations before. But they will have much less than that. The county hospitals will be gone so their health will decline. The libraries are being sold off and the parks are being opened up to mining. The forests will soon be toilet paper. The schools will be gutted and privatized by corporations that don't have to follow any standards so our next generations will have declining education, for profit colleges will connive to take their money so unwitting students end up in Golf College and huge student loan payments to the banks instead of a good diploma and potential for a profitable life.

And these Republicans are looking for every asset in every nook and cranny. Scott Walker wants to lease out the boiler rooms of the colleges. When the corporations are getting paid and earning profit where does that money come from? Probably from the college's operating fund...so more education is cut so the Koch brothers can earn a profit off of the College system. Once the Republican Party starts selling off our public assets for people to make profit from the emphasis is no longer to bring education, books, medicine, fitness to the people. It is to bring profit to a few select corporations. But what about the intent of our grandfathers and those broilers? They worked hard to pay to put those in place for the public benefit. That is what YOUR grandparents and their parents left to YOU. This is what THEY left to all of US.

American needs to stand up and tell these thieves they need to get their hands off our inheritance. They belong to all of us and are not for sale. These buildings and sports fields and schools and parks and libraries were given to us by our forefathers. These assets are what makes America strong, proud and a shining example to much of the world. We must protest, we must write and call and we must demand that the Republicans take their greedy little hands off things that don't belong to them and tell their corporate friends this:

If you want to make money, excellent. Then do it the right way. Work hard like the workers do. Create products that people want and the workers will happily build them for you. Look forward to help solve the big problems facing the globe like clean water and clean energy and the people will support you with tax breaks and support. We will line up to apply for the jobs to build the solar arrays and the filtration systems. But stop trying to make your money by pillaging the legacy of America. Stay out of our schools. Stop trying to sell our hospitals and colleges. Take the price tags off the forests and the parks.

I saw this behavior after my Grandmother died. Family members were practically shoving each other out of the way to grab things they wanted. Ugly greedy people with no thought to anything except how to get their hands on all the good stuff. Well, I have news for you... America is not dead. We are not a corpse for you to pick over. Get your hands off of our stuff.

The time has come for everyone to demand a halt to this. Email your legislators. Write a letter, make some phone calls. Donate some money to people fighting the good fight (and not just humanitarian issues...it is time to be political with our money). Share these stories on your facebook. Stand up America. If you haven't noticed, somebody is stealing all the nice things your grandparents left you.

We gotta grow a spine.

8. That's just about when I joined DU
Hmmmmm...I wonder if I saw your post and the phrase started bouncing around in the back of my mind. I had originally titled the piece "The All American Liquidation Sale" but yard sale sounded better.

Thanks for sharing your post. They and I obviously agree they are selling off all the assets. But they are not theirs to sell. Pity we can't charge them with selling stolen merchandise!

9. They'll go after state assets, though, till they can sell federal assets. Fracking in state parks,
for instance. I posted a topic about Governor Kasich's plan to allow fracking in Ohio's state parks, where drillers are especially interested in one very lovely park with lots of streams that could be destroyed by fracking.

Re the "yard sale" terminology -- I don't know if you channel surf cable news, as I do, and occasionally watch FOX to see what they're up to, but they were using that terminology about the same time I saw it on the Daily Caller website. So you could have heard it there, too, even if you didn't see my old topic.

24. It's James G Watt all over again.
Democrats were horrified when Watt promoted "end times" environmentalism under Reagan. Now state governors are following the legacy. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_G._Watt

6. Well said, and thank you!
I might add that it wouldn't hurt to start holding up practical models of those few in the House and Senate, (as well as other elected officials) who are doing their best to serve the better interests of The People, and the common good.

We have plenty of illustrations of the worst and top-ten lists to that effect, but little on the positive side of lauding the actions and efforts of those who are beacons for truth and justice, and who stand-out even more vividly by contrast to those serving special interest and who are actually working against our better interest.

So, consider spotlighting those who are actually making a difference with bios, endorsements and entreaties for more of the same. With something actual to offer as a gauge, perhaps more people and politicians will, at the very least, the incredible contrast and the insight of promise. we do have people who act as standards by which we can chart our course, out there.

Bernie Sanders, Al Franken and he Progressive Caucus come immediately to mind.

30. I think boycotts, petitions, protesting, emailing, calling...we gotta do it all!
The right is making their power move...either we jump in the fray or we watch from the sidelines. We only have those two choices.

Greed. Sorry Gordon Gekko, but greed is NOT good.

We're approaching NeoFeudalism with this kind of mentality.

It has to be stopped, or else WE will be stopped. WE as a country. WE as America.

Well done Snoutport!

AND it's a think piece FULL of talking points! Let's make use of the material in here when we have to debate some knuckledragger, or have to try to change someone's mind who can still be reached. Everybody should bookmark this one!

29. Very kind words Mary!
I am a do-er kind of guy so it is hard to read all these posts and not want to do what I can. I figure a call or a letter is the minimum...and I know the people on the right are gung-ho on this sort of stuff. We have to counterbalance that, you know?

23. They have successfully hoodwinked
a huge segment of America. It is allowing them to steal public assets. This is very like the privatization of services at COST PLUS in the Iraq War but on a grander scale. This is all part of a long term plan.

This is an attack on the very fiber of America. This is the greatest act of treason ever perpetrated on this nation.

We need to do all of them. We have to tell our non-pliitical friends to do it. We need to be visible about this and get the conversation started.
