Here’s What Happens When Manufacturing Disappears
http://blog.aflcio.org/2011/03/23/heres-what-happens-when-manufacturing-disappears/

Steve Cappozola of the Alliance for American Manufacturing (AAM), reports on what happens when manufacturing jobs disappear. This is a cross post from the AAM website.

Last week, Manufacture This published a chart showing how lost manufacturing jobs correspond with lower state revenues and higher state budget deficits.

We thought we’d amplify that point by citing a sad and disturbing New York Times article on the exodus of Detroit’s population. With Michigan hemorrhaging manufacturing jobs, Detroit’s population has fallen by 25 percent over the past decade. The result? 237,500 residents have left town.

Photos of Detroit show boarded-up and vacant homes. New York Times reporter Katharine Seelye describes this “as dramatic testimony to the crumbling industrial base of the Midwest.”

2. In these "rust belt" state, Michigan, Ohio, etc. whether you like
it or not, Public sector, Police, Fireman, Teachers and other
public workers are making up the Working Class and their
salaries are contributing to the economy of these states.

In comes the Republican Take Over. Teachers Police Fireman
and others being laid off. Get rid of Unions in an effort
to lower Salaries. Mind you, as described above the Private
Sector has already been wiped out and salaries lowered.
How is laying off Thousands of more workers improving the
economy. Businesses are not hiring because they do not have
customers. A Tax cut is not going to make them hire people.
They will hire when they see more customers demanding their
products. Making it impossible for the Public Sector to buy
their products makes no sense. Every time the Private Sector
tries to create more jobs, more layoffs will simply cancel out
the growth. This is what is going on in states not just the
rust belt. Trying to lower wages so we can compete with China??

3. nice assessment! now if only somebody from Democratic party INC would use that to fight back. As
in a systematic, well organized national strategy to identify the problem and offer solutions in association with a well organized and effective promotional campaign. You know, like republicans do....

4. They can depress wages to Chinese levels and business will still relocate to China
They are bribed to go there. More importantly though, the workers have no rights as citizens that employers are bound to resect. Workers have no voice in government either as unions or voters. This is a climate that our businessmen find ideal.

Corporate America is voting for Totalitarianism with its feet.
