ACLU: US treatment of Manning "inhumane"
Edited on Fri Mar-18-11 06:30 PM by Bluebear
WASHINGTON — The head of leading rights group ACLU wrote Defense Secretary Robert Gates on Wednesday deploring the "inhumane" detention conditions of a US soldier suspected of leaking secret US cables.

"On behalf of the ACLU and its members, I write to express our grave concern about the inhumane conditions under which (Private First Class) Bradley Manning is being confined in the Quantico Base Brig," American Civil Liberties Union executive director Anthony Romero wrote.

He stressed that even though Manning "has been convicted of no crime," it was clear from reports by the detained soldier and his counsel that "the gratuitously harsh treatment to which the Department of Defense is subjecting Private Manning violates fundamental constitutional norms."

Manning, 23, was arrested in June while deployed to Iraq amid suspicions he had passed a trove of secret US government documents to WikiLeaks, the whistle-blowing website, many of which were then published around the world.

9. Is this the third or fourth majorly respected international organization to protest his detention?
I'm getting so confused.... Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and now the ACLU?

Am I missing anyone?

This thread will be studiously ignored by those who don't want to "see" the truth - that something's really wrong with his detention (and as others have pointed out, he's not alone, there are others in similarly bad situations).

Jose Padilla may or may not have been a bad guy but his mental breakdown due to the conditions under which he was held means we'll never know for sure. Everyone who is paying attention should be alarmed by this kind of detention of anyone whereby its designed to break a person to ensure the "correct" verdict is rendered.

12. So now that will mean the MIC is going to step up his torture.
The more press he gets, the more evil shit they will think up to make him suicide. He embarrassed the MIC and they want every drop of his blood now.
