3. Good choice to lead with the Chevy Nova.
GM wondered why Nova sales were poor in Spanish speaking countries/populations. I'm told that the world translates to "doesn't go".

5. My husband has a couple 1963 Chevy Novas out in the barn.
He drives them n the summer. They're good cars, but feel amazingly less substantial than late model cars. My 1976 Chevette is still a good little machine, but it never had the greatest brakes in the world.

13. Huh...I usually check Snopes when I get e-mails I think is BS
And they usually are. I've heard story about Nova so many times from so many people, I guess I took it as conventional wisdom. Never owned a Nova, but had friends that did...I never thought it was an unreliable vehicle, actually seemed pretty decent. But the idea that the name could imply something entirely different in another language seemed pretty plausible to me. I guess it does sort of mean 'doesn't go', although it's not an exact representation of the phrase in Spanish.

7. I hope this issue of the aged nuclear plants in the US starts to get some attention.
Many of them are the same design as the ones we're watching in Japan. And they have the same method of spent fuel rod storage that is so precarious at the moment.

The NRC is looking at extending the life of these reactors out beyond SIXTY years. They were designed for 40 years, extended for another 20.

There are serious problems with extending the working life of nukes.

8. My sister's first husband worked at the other end of the state at Indian Point in the 70's.
They divorced a long time ago, but you make an excellent point about the age of these plants.

He always used to say that he would never live in the downwind area of the prevailing wind currents. Some of the things that he saw were disturbing to put it mildly. Imagine the "Animal House" frat running a reactor............

He's now a Senior Specialist with the NRC and gets sent to the "hot spots" (sorry for the pun) whenever there's an accident or problem at a facility.

The ironic part of this is that my sister ended up being the one who was exposed to radiation when Chernobyl blew. She picked a bad time to visit the USSR (at that time) and especially the Ukraine area. She downplays the possibility, but her health hasn't been right for a long time. I'm not saying that the exposure is causing her symptoms, but a lot of her problems are seen in people who have been exposed to excessive radiation.

11. The space shuttles were designed with early 1970's tech and used it for many many years
i forgot when they finally updated the computers and electronics in them but they used 1970s tech for a long time. I think into the 1990s.

Just putting things into a little perspective. However we mustn't overlook the Challenger disaster.
