Republicans push English-only bill, requires language tests
Republicans introduce legislation in the House and Senate to make English the official language of the U.S.

Republicans in both the House and Senate have introduced legislation that would declare English the official language of the United States and require the development of English language testing guidelines for those applying for U.S. citizenship.

2. The citizenship test for immigrants seeking naturalisation already requires English.
During your interview, a USCIS officer will test your ability to read, write, and speak English and your knowledge of civics. You must read one sentence out of three sentences correctly in English, and you must write one sentence out of three sentences correctly in English. Your ability to speak English is determined during your interview on your naturalization application. Finally, you must answer 6 out of 10 civics questions correctly to achieve a passing score.

You will be given two opportunities to take the English and civics tests and to answer all questions relating to your naturalization application in English. If you fail any of the tests at your initial interview, you will be retested on the portion of the test that you failed (English or civics) between 60 and 90 days from the date of your initial interview. See 8 CFR 312.5(a) and 335.3(b).

3. Stupid, a waste of money
and won't create any real jobs. Plus the tea-baggers would fail any English test that required correct spelling or grammar.

to English testing. My guess half would flunk spelling and grammar.

9. Just another way to limit participatory democracy.
I guess most immigrants don't vote Republican. Probably a lot fewer will vote for them in the future. I'd be less concerned with immigrants mangling our language and a lot more concerned with their base who can't seem to spell or convey a coherent idea in their native language.

17. how about we start with requiring AMERICANS to pass english tests
before requiring others to. they already know our history better than we do to gain citizenship for crying out loud.

trouble passing such tests.

21. Isn't it true that Italy requires a potential new Italian citizen to speak
Edited on Tue Mar-15-11 08:39 PM by Obamanaut
Italian, and even be able to write a simple postcard?

If this is true, why does it seem so bad for the US to have a similar requirement? Would these be the only two countries that do this?

22. Why is it that European countries can have an official language...
..but you bring it up in America and people lose their fucking shit?
This is a real question, by the way. I am not being flippant.
Just seems like a double standard.

23. It's a multiple standard
Each country treats it differently.

Some, like France, are really extreme about having an official language.

Others, like America, never really had an official one, just a common one.

And, America has a long, violent history of using language tests and other tests to discriminate against black voters.

25. I was in a Subway the other day....
And there were like five guys in front of me who didn't speak English. They had a really hard time telling the people what they wanted on their sandwich. I felt horrible for them. I don't speak Spanish or I would have helped them. They seemed a little embarrassed. They seemed like nice people. I just think they'd have an easier time of it if they learned English. I don't think they should be excluded or anything because they can't, but I just think it'd be easier for them if they learned the common language. And I don't understand why that is a horrible opinion.

24. Okay, how about this test for Goopers Congress Critters?
I want them to diagram a sentence. Any sentence a DU'er has written. I betcha dollars to donuts they can't even find the verb.

I want them to tell me the dif between an object pronoun, a subject pronoun and a prepositional phrase.

When they all can do that, then they might have a point. Until then, Ignoramuses: STFU!!!!
