Is there a point when our government decides NOT to send our troops and disaster aid personnel
to Japan due to potential radioactive contamination?
The State Department is already urging people NOT to travel to Japan.
Can International agencies monitor Japan's atmosphere to detect accurate and truthful "readings"?

4. Japan makes sense. We have thousands of men and women already there,
and Japan has been a staunch ally and partner since the war.

It's not like the other places we send our troops to where it's death to America until they need us then they suck on our teats then it's back to hating us.

7. How about we provide any help they request?
We're in no position to tell them what kinds of help they need.

9. Exactly! That is what the president has said. They are aware
of our capabilities and resources, and we have offered to assist when they request.

Our aid will probably come in other ways.

5. Two carriers so far.
"We currently have an aircraft carrier in Japan, and another is on the way," Obama said. He said another ship was heading to US territories in the Mariana Islands to "assist as needed."

A Pentagon spokesman said the two carriers were the USS George Washington, which is based at Yokosuka near Tokyo, and the USS Ronald Reagan, which was en route to South Korea for exercises and has been redirected to Japan.

6. US troops would have plenty of suits etc. to deal with contamination
and if something bad did happen, they could issue them to disaster aid personnel too.

The travel alert doesn't mention radioactivity. What it does say is that many roads in the north remains closed, and further quakes are possible. They issued a similar on Friday, before the problems with the nuclear plants were notable.

8. My son is stationed with USMC CBIRF at Indian Head, MD
They've been on alert to deploy as requested and necessary and have a tremendous capability to provide rescue and remediation in the event of Chem/Bio/Nuke accident or attack. So far, the Japanese have all the resources they need and have not requested support. CBIRF can begin to load their multiple transports and be airborne quite literally in a few hours. If the Japanese perceive worsening conditions for which they don't have capabilities, I expect to get a call that a contingent from CBIRF is on their way to Japan.

10. I heard an interview yesterday on CNN with the Japanese ambassador who said...
they have it handled themselves so far and are not requesting help at this time.
I surely hope so and you DON'T get that call from your son. :patriot:

11. That's strange; this says aid was already requested and sent
US officials have said while Japan's self-defence forces are among the most capable in the world in dealing with disaster response, the US will be prepared to augment their efforts.

Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan spoke by telephone to US President Barack Obama and the leaders of at least 50 other countries on Saturday to request help in the aftermath Japan's deadly earthquake.

Japan has quickly approved the arrival of specialist teams from Australia, New Zealand, South Korea and the United States.

12. I believe he was referring to help with their nuclear reactor "problem".
Yes, I did hear that our troops are distributing rice and bread already.

14. They haven't requested rescue and remediation assistance
due to problems with their nuclear reactors. My son's group does not feed/clothe survivors of natural disasters. They are specifically tasked to deal with catastrophic events that relate to chemical, biological and radiological releases and attacks. Most of the specialties in CBIRF aren't what you'd see with a typical natural disaster, though they do have search and rescue capabilities.

13. We are apparently sending in a Marine Expeditionary Force along with one or
two aircraft carriers. I am pretty sure they all have training in and are prepared for the possibility of radioactivity.

15. I heard that the 31st MEU is in the area, so depending upon
what request is made by the Japanese government, they could provide significant resources to aid in rescue and recovery.
